Life & Work with Beth Crowley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Crowley.

Beth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I posted my first YouTube video a parody song of the Axis of Awesome “4 Chord Song” sketch- in 2011. It gained more attention than I ever anticipated and gave me a platform to start posting my original music. In 2013, I released my first book-based song, “Warrior,” and it was reposted by several major fan sites for the book series as well as the author herself.

From there I went on to record a full-length album, two EPs, and over 60 singles with Daniel Dennis, my producer since 2014. As a completely independent artist, I have been able to cultivate a listener base of 160,000+ YouTube subscribers and 295,000+ Spotify monthly listeners, film numerous music videos, and write multiple commissioned songs for various novels and book series.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The decision-making process is especially hard as an independent artist because you have to wear so many hats all at once.

I find that 75% of what I do is the business/administrative side of music and about 25% is the actual creation of music. It is also incredibly stressful when online algorithms aren’t working in your favor and you don’t understand why. It’s hard not to take that personally.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer-songwriter whose bread and butter is lyrics and am probably most known for my songs inspired by popular books like Harry Potter, The Mortal Instruments, Throne of Glass, and many more.

I think the thing that I am proudest of is that I have been doing this for over 10 years now and haven’t given up on it even when it is difficult. My persistence, business sense, and intense work ethic (which sometimes can be detrimental- burnout is very real) are why I believe I have gotten as far as I have and what set me apart.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
My day-to-day life is really normal. I think the people that know me are surprised when they see me turn on my “artist” side because it’s definitely a different side of me.
