Life & Work with Brendon Kontur of Antioch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendon Kontur.

Hi Brendon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story began in Toledo, OH. with difficult circumstances, that I didn’t fully comprehend until later in life. It took a lot of reconciling, and a willingness to venture outside of what I had known, to turn the page, and see a brighter future. Music always guided me through those difficulties. Some of my first concert experiences include The Nutcracker Ballet, a Salsa Music Dance Group, and Jazz Music at Murphy’s Jazz Club (now closed in Toledo,OH.) I didn’t develop a disciplined level of dedication to studying, and learning to play music, until the age of 19. Which began with studying Classical Music, on Piano. I now write music for guitar, piano, vocals, and bass.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has had many obstacles along the way. Some of which include a tumultuous upbringing, overcoming addiction, and finding confidence in myself as a Musicial Artist.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So as a songwriter, my writing integrates elements of alternative music, jazz, and classical music in subtle ways. My style has been compared to the likes of Jim Croce, Radiohead, MJ Lenderman, and The Kinks. I think I specialize in crafting songs that weave eclectic musical elements while maintaining pop music sensibilities. With my songwriting I attempt to capture the essence of my own experiences, and what I see going on in the world. I think I’m set apart, by the combination of these elements within my musical style.

Any big plans?
As of right now, I’ll be hosting my next Songwriter’s Showcase, Protest In Song II, which is a showcase in which the songwriter’s/bands play a song or more about taking a stand in some way, or another! It’s also designed to give songwriters who typically play the open mic circuit a longer set time, and to place emphasis on Alternative Music in Nashville. I’ll also be recoroding some new songs soon, with the intention of recording an EP.
