Life & Work with Brittany Oldham and Nicholas Oldham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Oldham and Nicholas Oldham. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Nicholas Oldham (CEO). Mr. Oldham founded and successfully grew an entertainment company over a 9-year period. He is an accomplished actor, musician, and songwriter. His love for songwriting is what eventually lead him to dive into the book publishing industry. With a natural niche for arranging words, the move into publishing was not surprising. Mr. Oldham has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Tennessee State University, a Master of Arts degree in Christian Studies from Luther Rice University, a certificate in Data Analytics from Pivot Technology School, and a certificate in Supply Chain Management from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

Brittany Oldham (COO). Mrs. Oldham co-founded and successfully grew a small home-school group after having her first child. She discovered a genuine desire for reading books early in school. That desire was transferred to her son, Kingston, who she taught to read before he was 2 years old. By 4 years old, Mrs. Oldham had Kingston reading at a 6th-grade level. Mrs. Oldham is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from Tennessee State University. After having her first son and being a homemaker and homeschool parent for 3 years, she became a teacher’s Assistant at a local Montessori school. She has transferred her love for teaching her own son to the classroom by instilling a love for reading in many other students.

One day Nick received a call from a friend who stated she had written a book and was meeting a publisher in the next few days to let them read the book. She asked if she could read it to Nick for his opinion. When Nick heard the story, he was instantly intrigued. He rushed off the phone, burst through that door, and stated, “Honey, we need to start a book publishing company so we can publish this book I just heard!” Thus, King’s Kid Publishing was created.

Many people have amazing ideas and inspiring stories of either personal triumph or communal achievement but struggle to tell the story well. King’s Kid Publishing steps in to help authors find their voice, tell their stories and find fulfillment in knowing they are helping others.

One other problem that is prevalent in society is mass incarceration. It has been falsely stated that prisons use the reading scores of 3rd graders to determine when to build a prison. While this myth has been debunked, there are statistics that show a student not reading at his or her grade level by the end of the third grade is four times less likely to graduate high school on time (six times less likely for students from low-income families). Couple that staggering statistic with a 2009 study by researchers at Northeastern University who found high school dropouts were 63 times more likely to be incarcerated than college grads and you quickly realize how the myth was birthed.

Children not reading can lead to negative outcomes. So again, King’s Kid Publishing exists to help children discover a passion for reading to help their overall outcome in life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It certainly has not been a smooth road. We didn’t know the first thing about publishing books. After much research, many friends and family members told us not to start the company. We were constantly met with skepticism.

Initially, we were funding projects with our own personal money because finding outside funding was such a challenge. While those struggles seemed insurmountable, the biggest struggle was within ourselves because we were afraid no one would be interested in the product we thought was so great. After all, we were launching an entire company to publish books about a young African-American girl with autism.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our mission is to spark adventure through reading while igniting an understanding of human empathy. We will do this by sticking to our core values: kindle creativity, share knowledge, and promote positivity. We will use these values to enlighten the world, one thought, one book, and one selfless act at a time.

How does this look in action? In 2021, we partnered with a local company and gave away one of our personal cars to a family in need and gave their 5-year-old son a copy of all our published books.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
We wholeheartedly believe we can help interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline by getting adults to read to their children which in turn sparks an interest in the children to discover different worlds through reading. Barriers that would otherwise intellectually or geographically limit a child’s reach are annihilated through reading. With the support of our local communities through buying books, we can sign more authors to tell more stories that open up new worlds to more children.

We also intend to develop, design, and market adult books that focus on self-improvement.

Books can be bought by visiting our website: www.kingskidpublishing.com.
