Life & Work with Brittany Swick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Swick.

Hi Brittany, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been a creative artful soul, I have explored many different mediums in art and never found what captured my heart. I often found myself doing my friend’s and sister’s hair and makeup. I knew for putting myself or everyone together.

I quickly learned that that was in fact my form of art. The interesting mix of chemistry and color theory really had my interest. I dived into school when my husband was deployed in the middle east, with three children all under the age of 4. Long days and, short nights I set a 5-year goal for myself. I was determined to thrive in the hair and makeup industry. I knew I wanted to work for myself.

I connected with my community and got to work. I have had some awesome experiences traveling with Paul Mitchell, taking specialized classes in other states, giving back to the community using my skills, and working at fashion shows for charity. So many incredible things that really made me fall all the way in love. I started off in a commission salon because we relocated to Tennessee and I had to re-establish myself again.

My goal was to be in business for myself even if it was a suit and I managed my own business. I took a leap of faith and did it. Working for myself was the best thing I did. I thrived. During this time, my sister passed away and I had another baby, life got really real very quick. But my clients kept me going.

The raw relationships I created with them. Giving them my authentic self and creating a space where we don’t have to pretend we have it all together grew my business. I was amazed. People came from all over. I was searching for a larger space before I knew it to accommodate the large flow of clientele. I became more successful in my salon career and my traveling makeup artistry career.

Today, I am still sorting through what exactly I am doing, I just know it feels right, exactly where I am.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. I have experienced so much loss during my take-off in my career within my personal life.

Lost my best friend, my sister, lost of pregnancy, and my father while I was at work. Trying to keep it together but also be real with my clients so they don’t think I’m some freak of nature.

Being a mother of 4 children with a spouse who’s gone almost always. And having to build me up from the ground up. I have fought for everything I have and maintained.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in blonding, makeup, and extensions.

What sets me apart is I am 100% authentic and real. There is no fake me at our appointment. I like conversations that mean things. I love getting to know people. I am very spiritual, I think the universe works in ways we could never understand and puts people in our paths for reasons.

And I like to leave a lasting impression on my clients. I want people to feel like I am a safe space, with no judgment, no standards they have to meet, and no facade they need to put on. Just be you.

What matters most to you?
Making people feel good inside and out.

I know what it is like being in the darkest and lowest places and sometimes a little self-love like going to the salon and a good conversation can really bring you out of that place.
