Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassy Laessig.
Hi Cassy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Badass by Cass started as a creative outlet while I was first navigating blood cancer and had to step back from my normal hair and makeup work to focus on treatment. With more downtime than I was used to, I poured that energy into designing merchandise that felt creative and motivating. Since my regular work had paused, the financial uncertainty made it both scary and motivating.
Instead of starting a GoFundMe, I created products as a way for people to support me in a more personal way. Today, I design motivational, cancer-related, and lighthearted merchandise for those fighting, healing, supporting someone they love, or simply needing something to make a hard day feel a little lighter.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road. Chemo has made me more tired and less motivated at times, which can be frustrating when you’re used to being busy and productive. I’ve had to learn how to slow down, give myself grace, and create in smaller pockets of energy instead of pushing through like I used to.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create websites, merchandise, and social media content for my own brands and for brands I believe in and choose to help grow. Recently, I’ve focused my energy on motivational merchandise as a way to turn a challenging health diagnosis into something positive.
While I’ve been known for doing hair and makeup for the past 10 years, I’ve been exploring new creative ways to express myself, especially through digital design. The projects I create feel fresh and personal.
I’m proud of always pushing myself out of my comfort zone, even when it’s scary. What sets me apart is I just follow my instincts. Everything I make is unique, and you won’t find it anywhere else.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve definitely taken risks, and I see them as a necessary part of growth. One of the biggest for me was stepping back from my steady hair and makeup work to focus on treatment and putting my energy into designing merchandise instead. There was no guarantee it would bring in income, so financially it was uncertain, but it felt like the right move creatively and personally.
I see risk as a mix of gut instinct and practicality. I try to think through what’s possible, but I don’t let fear stop me from trying new things. Even if it doesn’t go perfectly, I usually learn something valuable from it.
