Today we’d like to introduce you to Cha Sloan.
Hi Cha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I love my job. Being a Makeup Artist has helped me get through things. I have met and worked with a lot of amazing people. I’ve been to places that I wouldn’t have known. I get to be creative. It has taught me to appreciate different kinds of beauty and not to judge people easily.
We moved to Nashville a few years ago and my job has helped me explore TN. Moving to a new country has been tough. It’s a big culture shock but when I’m working, I don’t have to worry about anything else but to focus on my client and the art.
My job is to help someone realize one’s own beauty. Life happens and sometimes we forget about ourselves. Adding a coat of mascara or putting on that red lipstick can be powerful. It can change your mood and give you confidence. Makeup can transform you into whoever you want to be, even for a day. You’re in control.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The pandemic definitely made it a lot more difficult to be a business owner and an artist.
My biggest critic is myself. Am I good enough? Am I educated enough? I should’ve done better. I should’ve done this and that.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Makeup Artist trained at MUD in Los Angeles back in 2006. I was a resident makeup artist for a men’s magazine, shaping who I am today as an artist. I had fun working and learning from local and international models, celebrities, top-notch photographers, hair and fashion stylists. They kept me grounded. It’s so much better when you work as a team to create something beautiful.
I’ve been known for doing natural and fresh makeup looks. I believe makeup is to enhance and not distract from your beauty.
I’m very passionate, patient, and a hard worker. When I work with a client, I want it to be an experience. I do my research before the service. I keep my studio clean, relaxing, smelling good, with good music in the background. I take my time. I don’t do hair because I like to keep my focus on prepping the skin and applying makeup.
I’m proud of myself for always wanting to do and be better. Even after over ten years, I continue to learn. I attend trade shows, participate in online seminars and learn from the best in the industry about new products and techniques.
How do you define success?
With everything that’s going on and what I’ve been through, the most important thing is to have peace of mind. I know it sounds cheesy but it’s having great relationships with family and friends.
Being from the Philippines and now living in the US gave me a different perspective on life. I’m grateful to have generous, compassionate, and hard-working parents who have been great role models. Being away from them has made me appreciate them and the lessons they were trying to teach me even more.
My husband is Scottish and we both embrace and respect each other’s cultures. It’s a learning experience and it’s been fun. He has been a positive influence in my life.
