Life & Work with Chandler Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chandler Powell.

Hi Chandler, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Chandler Powell lead singer of Three Years Apart and I want to mention my band in this as well. Three Years Apart is a four-piece Alternative Rock band that formed in 2019. Our members include Hayden Minton (Drums), my brother Cooper Powell (Bass), Camden Skidmore (Lead Guitar), and me Chandler Powell (Vocals and Rhythm Guitar). The band was formed with our Drummer Hayden Minton, Bassist Cooper Powell, and me, alongside two other members that are no longer in the band. Mine and Cooper’s grandfather Bill Brummett, is one of our songwriters and co-writers. My grandfather and I always collaborate lyrically, which I am blessed to say I can do.

We recorded an acoustic live album in 2019 which was later released in 2020. The sound and style from that album are not at all who we are today and how we want to progress with our music. After our other members left, we knew we needed a true lead guitarist and that’s when we met Camden. The summer of 2020 made it hard to practice due to sickness, but we made it work the best we could.

In search of a new producer and engineer, we came across a member of our church. Will Snyder was a Nashville artist who won the 2008 singing show “CMTs Can You Duet.” He was part of a duet group named “Caitlin & Will.” We started working with our friend Will in October 2020 where we would spend the next two years creating our first studio album released on October 13th, 2022, named “A Different View.”

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This question can go both ways. We couldn’t do this without all of our families and supporters that push us to do better each time we play and or create. My father is an award-winning photographer who takes our professional pictures as well as our live shots. Our amazing artwork is done by my girlfriend Emily Sharp who hand draws and paints each piece. Our mentors musically are Will Snyder and Bill Brummett who help and guide us through our songwriting process.

Although we are grateful in so many aspects, it is hard to be a rock act from Corbin and Williamsburg Kentucky. In our small towns, you won’t find many venues that support what we are doing and that makes it hard to build a fan base. Not only are we working towards expanding our search for venues, but I am currently in college and Cooper is in High School. I have to say we are never bored.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the lead singer, rhythm guitarist, and songwriter/co-writer for my band Three Years Apart. We have a long way to go before we are known for anything; however, our most popular songs are “Bad Advice For A Good Time” and “The Otherside.” I am most proud of how our band was able to create music we enjoy playing. Another accomplishment we are proud of is winning the Franklin County fair which allowed us to play at the Kentucky State Fair.

What I believe sets us apart from other artists is our way of songwriting. We feel as if we don’t sound like any other band. Our song structure is pretty simple, but we try to stay away from similar melodies and chord progressions that other artists have used. We also love a huge sound, and this was something we wanted to reach when creating “A Different View.” The goal for our album was to create something positive. The world is full of depressing music. We are guilty of this, especially on our live album, but this is something we think sets us apart. Your music doesn’t have to be dark and depressing to classify as art.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My style of singing and my band’s style of playing. We have so many influences that we try to take with us to the studio. I don’t have the best voice if you look in terms of traditional singing. What I do think I have is a unique voice that I hope people will catch onto. I’ve always been interested in singers with unique voices such as Billy Corgan, Gerard Way, and Matt Schultz.

Cooper Powell’s inspirations for bass include Roger Waters, Juston Chancellor, and Dallon Weekes. Camden’s playing and inspiration came from his favorite guitar players such as Tom Delonge and Billy Joe Armstrong. Hayden’s drumming style is a mashup between classic rock, alternative, metal, and punk, and his biggest inspirations are The Rev, Travis Barker, and Neil Peart.
