Life & Work with Courtney Dickey of Bellevue

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Dickey

Hi Courtney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am Courtney B. Dickey Jr a 23 year old senior at the illustrious Tennessee State University where I major in family & consumer science with a concentration in fashion merchandise. Growing up in small town Humboldt, Tennessee, I was one of five siblings (Jekeia, Skyy, Courtez, & Jaylan) in a household led by a single, hardworking mom Crystal. We faced our share of challenges, often relying on family support in the past, while also helping others, but we never lost faith. My mother’s dedication and the resilience of our family set the foundation for my own dreams.

My passion for fashion was kindled by my grandmother Mattie, who was a style icon in her own right. As her first grandchild, I spent a lot of time with her, absorbing her love for fashion and her impressive collection of bags. This early exposure to fashion was pivotal in shaping my aspirations.

In 2012, my mom enrolled us in the Boys and Girls Club, where I took my first sewing class. I still remember the excitement of making my first pillow. Growing up in a small town like Humboldt, opportunities were limited, so I knew I had to make the most of every chance I got. Even though we wore school uniforms, I developed a reputation for having a unique sense of style, which sometimes drew envy but also a lot of admiration.

As a high school senior, I took a big step by custom-making a denim varsity jacket for my mom’s high school homecoming. This project was a milestone that cemented my passion for design. My hard work thru high school was rewarded with a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, a turning point that allowed me to leave home and pursue my dreams in a new environment.

At TSU, I became known as a talented seamstress and designer & even influencer. Despite still being in the learning phase, I’ve managed to establish myself on campus as someone who delivers quality work. Joining the Allure Modeling Troupe further fueled my passion, allowing me to explore design and styling in new ways. I also launched my own shoe website, “ChicLikeCourt,” dedicating my first collection to Camya Young, a little girl from Humboldt who had passed away. This project wasn’t just about fashion; it was about honoring her memory and giving back to her family.

My work has attracted attention beyond campus, including custom designs and alterations for Titans’ wives, TSU graduates, and Nashville residents. The support and recognition I’ve received in Nashville have been incredibly motivating, driving me to push further and make a positive impact.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Maintaining school while fighting for financial aid justice has been a significant challenge. After changing my major from Business to Fashion at the end of my sophomore year, I had to take extra classes, which caused my scholarship to be adjusted. This shift was disheartening and added to my stress. Balancing these issues with academic responsibilities wasn’t always easy. Despite these hurdles, I’ve persevered and am now close to completing my degree with just 23 hours left. Still withholding a GPA 3.0 higher. Both my mother and I have worked hard to reach this point, and it’s a testament to our resilience and dedication. Delayed never Denied.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the CEO of “ChicLikeCourt” where I specialize in alterations, designing, and styling. I also launched my own shoe website, “ChicLikeCourt,” dedicating my first collection to Camya Young, a little girl from Humboldt who had passed away. This project wasn’t just about fashion; it was about honoring her memory and giving back to her family. A portion of the proceeds from these shoes will support a scholarship for her sister.

My work has attracted attention beyond campus, including custom designs and alterations for Titans’ wives, TSU graduates, and Nashville residents. The support and recognition I’ve received in Nashville have been incredibly motivating, driving me to push further and make a positive impact.

As I continue to grow in my career, I’m committed to setting new standards for myself and inspiring others. My journey is far from over, and I’m excited to see where my passion and dedication will take me next.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I never had a formal mentor, either in college or before, and I’ve navigated my journey largely on my own. However, I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to those who have supported me along the way. My mother has been my first client and unwavering supporter, providing me with the encouragement and motivation I needed.

I also want to acknowledge my friends who have been instrumental in my journey: Jurnee, Britney, Eugene, Ciarra, Carlasia, Mendy, Robyn Barnett, Rita Steward, Mardavia, Tiffany, Nicole Mayberry, Starr Hill, Kennedy Cooper, Khari, Devin, Tre’sur, Shania Shaw, Zamya, Jada, Jade, Jai, Jordan, Kennedy Lewis, Gigi, Jaelyn, Lele, Asia Williams, Amija, Tierra, Essence, Khadijah, and Chandra Maclin. These individuals have been with me since day one. Asia, Lele, and Khari were particularly crucial as they provided me with my first sewing machine and mannequin, which were essential for starting my career. Their support, along with that of my other friends, has been invaluable. Meeting such genuine people in college and my hometown has given me a strong support network that has truly made a difference in my success. I will reign & forever be the infamous Courtney Dickey. I will continue to inspire because I don’t want to expire.
