Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Puncochar.
Hi Dave, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started my business in my East Nashville garage, finding old wood and selling it on craigslist out of the garage. We had one pursuit: Make beautiful things out of old, reclaimed, and unique wood. We made flooring, furniture, accent walls, signs, and anything else our clients could think of. In 2017, we moved our business from Inglewood (East Nashville) to Dickerson Pike, closer to downtown Nashville. Good Wood Nashville has been in business for over 10 years! Once we moved onto Dickerson Pike, we got excited to join Dickerson Road Merchants Association. After a few years, the group asked me to serve as President of the non-profit organization.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Finding space to do woodworking in the city has always been hard. We are grateful to have found our current building. Lately, hiring has been hard. Since Covid, the job market does seem to have changed. We’ve also had to be nimble and shift strategies as the world seem to change each month. I started this company as a hobby in my garage. Sometimes I wish I had made an actual business plan, but I guess none of it would have been predictable had I tried!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in one-of-a-kind woodworking projects. We mill custom wood floors (think wide plank or floors that differ from any house you’ve ever seen). We custom build furniture: Dining Tables, Desks, Conference Tables, even one-of-a-kind wood signs for indoors, restaurants, homes, etc. If you can dream it up and make it from wood, we can build it.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
In my opinion, in the early days and 10 years in, each time we add a new position and hire a new person, it is a risk. You hope it will help your company grow the right way, but you don’t know. Every first hire, we dipped in our Profit to pay for the person, but overall, nearly every hire helps you grow. Buying the building on Dickerson Pike was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done financially. I hoped it would help our business grow, but getting a mortgage for a large building was scary.
