Life & Work with Destin Miller of Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destin Miller.

Hi Destin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a toddler, I would turn pots and pans into my own personal drum set, putting on full performances around the house. My parents quickly recognized my passion for music and encouraged it every chance they got, especially during Christmas, when instruments like guitars, keyboards, and drum sets would magically appear under the tree.

My formal musical journey began in 5th grade when I joined the school band as a clarinet player. After two years, I switched to saxophone in 7th grade, and everything changed. Around that same time, my dad introduced me to the legendary Grover Washington Jr. through his classic tune “Mister Magic.” From the very first listen, I was hooked. That song opened the door to a whole world of jazz and soul music, leading me to discover artists like Gerald Albright, Dexter Gordon, and Eddie Harris. From that moment forward, I knew music was more than a hobby, it was my calling.

I became a first-generation college graduate when I earned my bachelor’s degree from Tennessee State University in 2022. I later completed my master’s degree at Belmont University in 2024. Both institutions played a major role in shaping me not only as a musician, but also as an educator and professional.

During my collegiate career, I had the opportunity to perform across the United States and internationally in countries such as Colombia. One of the highlights of my journey was contributing to The Urban Hymnal, the Grammy Award-winning project by the TSU Aristocrat of Bands.

Today, I remain deeply involved in the Nashville music scene as a freelance saxophonist, performing for weddings, corporate events, concerts, private engagements, and more throughout the city and beyond.

In addition to performing, I’m passionate about music education. I maintain an active private lesson studio, serve as a high school woodwind coach and jazz band director, and currently perform as the principal saxophonist for the Nashville African American Wind Symphony.

I’ve been blessed to work with several artist such as Old Crow Medicine, Starlito, Brassville, Tiera Kennedy, The Shindellas, and Jekayln Carr. while also leading my own group known as Destin Miller & The Soulful Few

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey as a professional musician has definitely come with its share of setbacks and challenges. There were times when I had to work multiple non-music jobs that I genuinely disliked just to stay financially stable while continuing to pursue my passion. Those experiences taught me resilience, patience, and how much sacrifice can come with chasing a dream.

One thing I’ve learned is that success is rarely a straight path, it’s more like a roller coaster filled with highs, lows, wins, and uncertainty. There are seasons where you’re booked every week, constantly performing and feeling momentum build. Then there are other moments where the calendar is completely empty, and you start questioning whether this lifestyle is truly sustainable.

But through all of it, I’ve held onto one belief: dreams only become impossible when you stop pursuing them. Life doesn’t guarantee success, comfort, or recognition, but settling for an average life out of fear guarantees you’ll never reach your full potential. I would rather endure the ups and downs that come with chasing purpose than spend my life wondering what could have happened if I had kept going.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an artist, educator, and creative whose primary voice is the saxophone, while also doubling on flute and clarinet. As a freelance musician, no two weeks ever look the same. One day I may be recording a studio session, the next performing at a wedding or corporate event, leading worship on a Sunday morning, or playing in a packed bar on Broadway at 2 a.m. That variety is one of the things I love most about being a musician, it constantly challenges me to adapt, connect, and bring the same level of passion into every setting.

Beyond performing, I am deeply committed to music education because I understand firsthand how transformative it can be. Music played a major role in shaping my life, and I carry that perspective into every teaching opportunity I’m given. Whether I’m teaching a private saxophone lesson, leading a woodwind masterclass, or directing a jazz band rehearsal, I strive to pour into students with the same energy, encouragement, and mentorship that once poured into me.

Musically, I specialize in funk, R&B, hip hop, gospel, jazz, and neo-soul, the same genres that serve as the foundation of my personal group and artistic identity. My sound is rooted in tradition while still embracing modern influences, creating a blend that reflects both the legacy of the artists who came before me and the culture of today. I believe that ability to seamlessly fuse multiple styles and musical languages together is what truly sets me apart as an artist.

What are your plans for the future?
As I look toward the future, I’m currently focused on developing my voice as a composer and arranger by writing original music in preparation for releasing an EP in the near future. This next chapter of my journey is exciting because it allows me to move beyond interpretation and performance into creating music that reflects my own experiences, influences, and artistic vision.

At the same time, I plan to continue expanding my reach as a freelance saxophonist by building new performance opportunities, collaborations, and connections both locally and beyond. I want my music and artistry to impact audiences in a variety of spaces while continuing to grow as a performer and creative professional.

In addition to performing and composing, I’m also passionate about creating digital products and services designed to help aspiring musicians navigate their own journeys. I want to provide insight into the behind-the-scenes realities of being a professional musician, the preparation, discipline, business knowledge, and everyday experiences that people often don’t see. My goal is not only to inspire other musicians, but also to equip them with practical tools and guidance that can help them grow both artistically and professionally.
