Life & Work with Emily Potter Higgins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Potter Higgins.

Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career in Memphis when I took cosmetology in high school when I was 15. By age 19, I was licensed and working in a hair salon. In 2004, I took my first lash extensions course and was hooked on having a passionate career doing lash extensions. I began offering lashes when it was very rare and not in many salons. My clientele grew, and I eventually left Memphis to journey to Nashville. In 2009, I began rebuilding a new life and clientele from scratch in Nashville. I eventually felt the calling to create my own small business. I wanted to offer high-quality lashes and hair in a private, relaxing environment. And so Red Rose Salon & Lash Bar was born in 2011. For over 10 years, I’ve enjoyed making women feel and look better. My business is my baby, my pride, and my joy. I hope to continue servicing women for many years to come.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No. The road has not always been smooth. The hardest part was when I moved to Nashville and had to restart building my clientele from scratch in 2009. I only made $30 in my first week of work in Nashville, even though I worked in a large, highly recognized salon. A 50% cut of $60 doesn’t pay the bills. I was terrified financially, but I kept grinding. When my Red Rose Salon & Lash Bar was recognized as “Best of Nashville” Lash Bar in 2018 & 2019, I thought back to that tough journey, making it even more gratifying. My tight bonds and relationships with my clients were the key to surviving as a small business amidst the COVID pandemic. I was named London Lash Artist in that challenging year of 2020.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in textured lash work using mega-volume and Russian volume techniques. I think my speed and attention to detail with adhesives mixed with the highest quality techniques are aspects that have set me apart.

My husband and I love to travel, and I’ve had a chance to train with some of the other top lash artists. Clients are busy, and I deliver the highest quality with time efficiency and fun conversation.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People often think I’m extroverted because I love to talk and have a sense of humor. I love one setting but don’t like large crowds or public speaking. I wouldn’t say I like the attention being all on me. I’m introverted and shyer than people think. I get energized with some downtime and love to read.
