Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Drennan.
Hi Eva, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My story has been nothing short of an interesting ride up to this point in my life. Growing up, I loved music and chased after any instrument I could get my hands on. I started playing the drums, learning to record music, going to church and running sounds and then moved to Nashville (naturally, lol). From there, I was in the studio while working retail. During that season, I got asked to take photos for a friend on tour, and that’s when my life truly changed. I felt like it was something that I was meant to be doing. That is where I started with photography, with no idea how to do it. I got on YouTube and had to learn how to use a DSLR camera quickly. After five years of shooting, I still love it and grow daily by learning more and more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the struggle many creatives have is comparing themselves to others. Once you get into your grove with creating, things start happening, and you create something that is “you.” It hasn’t been the smoothest road, but I know that I am supposed to be creating things to put out in the world; whether it’s photos or apparel, I know I am supposed to be doing it!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in live/concert photography. I shoot a lot at my church, where I have learned from professionals in the industry. What sets me apart is the creative take I use when shooting. Photography has no limits or rules, which gives you the freedom to try whatever you want. I take that and run with it. I’m known for shooting through things that don’t make sense, but then they turn out to be beautiful captures.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk-taking is something that I think for me is also aligned with balance. Risks are important when creating but you’ve got to be carful to not sacrifice how far you’ve come. A risk I took recently was leaving my stable job to pursue my dreams and goals. I’ve had to ensure I don’t get stuck in a take-take world but a world of giving. Risk is scary, but sometimes you must bet on yourself and take the risk.
