Today we’d like to introduce you to George Johnson. 

Hi George, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Back in the Winter of 2016, I sat and had a conversation with the current campus DJ, DJ Hogghead. We were discussing how once he graduates that Fisk campus spirit would decline. I decided at that moment I wanted to take on the role of becoming the Campus DJ to keep the spirits and energy high. Although, I had a musical background and played as a 1st Trumpeter in the famous Chicago Dusable Band and self-taught pianist, I had no idea that I was going to become the Ultimate DJ.

From DJing Fried Chicken Wednesdays to Greek Fridays, to college parties and clubs/lounges, to private parties and weddings, I found myself to where I am today. I am indeed a well-rounded DJ who has a natural ear for music. I have fine-tuned my skills through watching my mentors; DJ C-Wiz, DJ C-Lo, and DJ C-Dub

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
See, when it comes to the path of DJing and discovering what my niche was it was very challenging. One of the many struggles was realizing my self-worth. I found it rather difficult to stand my ground when clubs, individual businesses, and party promoters wanted my services, but paid low. I sometimes thought, was I really worth this little or not as good as I thought I was. One thing I can say is that it has been very rewarding once I forged my own path.

Through time, I learned to be confident with my DJ abilities. I knew whenever my hands touch the turntables the magic happens. Immediately, I am in control of the crowd & space the entire set. From the smooth melodious sounds of R&B to the head-boppin booty-shaking Hip Hop, to the ultimate vibes of line dance songs I kept the crowd engaged. On one random night of spinning, it hit me, I am the Ultimate DJ, my self-worth is mine, and I will stand on my prices. Going forward, people began to pay me my price, my self worth.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am my own business. I am DJ G3OnTheBeat. I’ve been DJing for 5 years in Nashville, TN. I have traveled to Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans, Florida, Kentucky to DJ. My style of DJing is a unique and creative sound that once heard, it’s like no other. I love mixing instrumentals & acapellas. I would take Montel Jordan “This Is How We Do It” acapella and mix it with Too Short “Blow The Whistle” or I would take something as smooth as Usher “U Got It Bad” and blend it with Afrika Bambaataa “Planet Rock” during peak of the hour.

Some of the services I offer besides DJing is sound & light rental, karaoke equipment, and my personal favorite, DJ classes.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First, the credit goes to my Almighty God, my Lord & Savior. The rest of the people who played a key part in my success are my DJ mentors, DJ C-Wiz, and DJ C-Lo. They truly taught and showed me what it really takes to be a successful DJ. It is more than just mashing buttons or putting two tracks together. I would like to give credit to my other mentor Markeith Braden. He believed that I was great and that my self worth began with me. Only then would I get paid what I want. I also would like to give the credit to my fraternity brothers, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Through It, I was able to expand my network. I also would like to give a shout-out to my recruiter who put me in the Army National Guard, Sergeant Jeremy Rawls. Through the military, I was able to pay off all my debt, and then invest all my time and energy into DJing. Finally, I would like to thank my home team. My family & friends have supported me unconditionally, and always kept me accountable and focused.
