Life & Work with Ginger Wixx of Oak Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Wixx

Hi Ginger, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been drawn to music. From a very young age, I took up guitar lessons and sang karaoke at my grandparents’ while no one was home. I was always very shy/introverted with my voice.

I learned enough guitar to hold rhythm and get by on my own. I’m no master there. My true passion is singing. I began learning material and going to a few open mics in my hometown of Kenova, West Virginia. From there, I did the talent show in high school a few times. And when I graduated, I abandoned my love for music while I tried to snap into reality and figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

Flash forward 3 years later. I ended up graduating from cosmetology school and ended my first “real” relationship. For how things rounded out, I’m grateful. It sent me on a new path with music again. This time, I was writing original songs. I felt like I finally had something to say.

I got back in the swing of open mics, but to the max. Traveling all over West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia just to meet other musicians and have a chance to perform.

I got some pretty cool gigs doing that. In 2023, I played over 115 shows – independently booked and traveled to. But as we all know, local musicians are severely underpaid in many areas. I had to go into the service industry for a bit. I saved up some money and moved to Nashville in September 2024.

I’ve since picked up another serving job and am taking my time to get to know this city, the music, and find my inspiration to write again.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s hard to find those that you can truly connect with, and even harder when you lose them.

Finances, burnout, and loss have all been factors of struggling to stay motivated within music.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a pretty great server! I love the restaurant life and how it flows. It’s the perfect way to meet people organically and make quick money. Not to mention the discounted food.

Serving definitely is the perfect glue to keeping my dreams together. Gives me enough time and resources to create.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the diversity in all areas of music, culture, fashion, and art.

Of course traffic can be a headache.
