Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Carter
Hi Holly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a love for being in the kitchen and being creative. I remember always cooking in the kitchen with my mom and always having some type of drawing or painting I was creating. So, after taking a cookie decorating class in the fall of 2018 with my mom, I began dreaming of the idea of starting a business. Later that year, my mom gifted me an apron for Christmas (not knowing I was thinking of starting a cookie business), hence the name, The Checkered Apron. Now, 5.5 years later, I can say as a self-taught baker, I have fallen in love with the entire process of cookie decorating and have turned it from a creative outlet to a career.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Balancing a small business and family life has required flexibility and adaptability. I have learned to celebrate small victories and have grown from setbacks, remembering that it is okay to seek help and take things one step at a time. With dedication, continuous learning, and strategic planning, I have successfully managed my business while being a wife, mom and an exceptional cookier.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I believe in the value of homemade, handcrafted quality baked goods. As the owner of a cottage home bakery, I love serving my local community by using the best ingredients and serving delicious baked goods. From custom sugar cookies to decadent drop cookies, I have always wanted to be a part of celebrations and help others spread a little love and happiness.
How do you define success?
Success in a cottage home bakery cookie business, especially while balancing roles as a wife, mom, and volunteer, can be defined by a combination of personal fulfillment, business achievements, and effective life balance. Over the past 5.5 years, I have created a recognizable brand within my community that in turn has helped me build a loyal customer base. Having the opportunity to express creativity through cookie designs and flavors has helped me to keep moving forward. My network of family and friends has helped me recognize the importance of self-care, relaxation, and overall happiness when it comes to the work/life balance. They have also encouraged me to continuously learn new techniques and improve skills. Success over the past 5.5 years has also been greatly defined by celebrating the small and large achievements in both my business and personal life.
