Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Jensen
Hi Jacqueline, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Music was always my life plan. Originally from Illinois, I started piano when I was four years old and continued studying music through high school, eventually adding voice, guitar, and ukulele. For college, I studied Jazz Voice at The University of North Texas and then got my degree in Commercial Voice Performance, from Belmont University. After graduation, I decided to permanently stay in Nashville, and soon after started my lesson business. I went all in right from the beginning, and have loved every minute teaching full time and building my studio. I have now worked with students and artists not only in the greater Nashville area, in-person, but around the world, virtually. To date, I have taught more than 22,000 lessons, created and implemented ukulele learning programs in local schools, hosted dozens of recitals and events, have fundraised thousands of dollars for local charities and organizations, and most recently, was invited to become a member of The Recording Academy. I am exceedingly proud to work with my incredible students, and have the opportunity to continue to making a positive impact in my community.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest obstacle was definitively Covid. Before Covid I taught only in-person lessons and was very content to do so. When everything shut down, I set up what I thought would be a temporary home studio. I imagined we’d just do virtual learning for a couple of weeks, and then everything would go back to normal. Well, we all know that didn’t happen. Because of Covid, I ended up teaching exclusively virtually for about a year and a half.
What began as an incredible challenge, became a blessing in disguise for my business, as I was able to expand and take on students from all over the world. I now teach virtually 3 days a week, and in person the rest. I love it!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a multi-genre vocal coach, advanced piano teacher and vocal producer. Essentially, this means I’ve been trained in a ton of modalities and am capable of teaching many genres and levels of music, as well as coaching artists and songwriters in and out of the studio. This ability to do so many things is what sets me apart in this industry.
In my private lessons we have endless opportunities. We can work on multiple instruments, beginner to advanced, in genres like contemporary/pop, musical theater, classical, jazz, and more. In those lessons we can also do ear training, music theory, or even audition prep! My lessons are tailored to the student and I very proudly teach all ages.
Vocal production is a little bit different. As a vocal producer, I help songwriters and artists make the most of their originals and recording projects. Outside of the studio I customize vocal warmups, help artists workshop melodies and arrangements, help create harmonies on the spot, and even help chart music so they are ready for a band. In the studio, my job is to help my artists make the most of their time, by coaching them through their pieces and helping them get the best take, possible.
What I’m most proud of is being able to create with and empower so many different kinds of people through doing what I absolutely love most in life—music. Someday soon, I hope to open up a brick and mortar studio-event space, making lessons and live events even more accessible. This will be a space for musicians of all levels to learn, create community, and perform.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My greatest mentors have come from my music study programs. (Big shout outs to Lynda Marshall and Bruce Bennett!) I highly encourage folx to pursue all kinds of lessons, do the masterclasses and camps, audition, and put yourself out there. And most importantly, always show up as your authentic self. Your people will always find you, business or otherwise, if you are authentically you.
