Today we’d like to introduce you to Janessa Graham.
Hi Janessa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I live at the intersection of faith, purpose, and impact. With a voice shaped by worship and a heart for connection, my life’s work is rooted in transforming lives through music, ministry, motivation, and education, the foundation of my brand, Janessa’s Way.
I’m a Chicago native who discovered my gift at just two years old, spending nine formative years ministering with the legendary youth choir, Joshua’s Troop. Those early moments in worship didn’t just shape my sound, but they shaped my calling and my deep commitment to service.
That journey led me to Kentucky State University, where I earned my degree in Child Development and Family Relations. While serving in campus ministries and local churches, my calling became clearer, grounding me spiritually and preparing me for the work I continue to do today.
In 2021, I launched Janessa’s Way, LLC, a purpose-driven platform built on the belief that walking boldly in your calling changes lives, starting with your own. It’s more than a brand; it’s how I live and how I serve.
After answering my call to preach in 2016 and becoming a licensed associate minister in 2018, my musical journey continued to unfold. From my debut single “It Belongs to You – Psalms 18” to my album Journal Entries and my 2024 release “God Will Take Care of You,” my music reflects faith, healing, and the steady reminder that God is present in every season.
Beyond music, I lead College Hymnal Sessions: Sheet Music to Student Success, where I mentor students, traditional and non-traditional, through purpose-centered guidance in higher education. I hold a Master’s degree in Higher Education and am currently pursuing my Doctorate in Education & Innovation, bridging faith and learning to empower students and communities to live authentically and on purpose.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road—every story comes with its own rollercoasters and leaps of faith. Mine is no different, yet beautifully unique. From the very beginning, I’ve faced adversity, but my faith has always been stronger.
My mother had a healthy, amazing pregnancy, but I was born with an abnormal right arm. What some may have seen as a limitation, I’ve come to understand as purpose. Walking through life with this difference has shown me that my existence is intentional and divinely designed.
I’ve overcome every expectation the doctors placed on what I “wouldn’t” be able to do. Today, I live freely, boldly, and unapologetically—choosing to experience life on my own terms. Every obstacle has only strengthened my resolve and deepened my faith.
This journey hasn’t just been about resilience—it’s been a true walk of faith. And through it all, I’ve learned that purpose always outweighs limitation.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I wear many hats, but everything I do is rooted in purpose, faith, and impact. I am a gospel recording artist, educator, and motivational leader who uses music, mentorship, and education as tools for transformation. Through my brand, Janessa’s Way, I specialize in helping individuals—especially students and young adults—discover their “why,” overcome obstacles, and walk confidently in their purpose.
In education, I’m known for my work in student success, retention, and holistic advising. I’ve spent nearly a decade serving in higher education and K–12 spaces, supporting first-generation students, nontraditional learners, and those navigating life transitions. I created College Hymnal Sessions: Sheet Music to Student Success, a faith-centered coaching and mentoring approach that blends practical academic guidance with spiritual encouragement. It helps students find their rhythm, define their goals, and stay the course toward graduation.
In music ministry, I’m recognized for my powerful vocals, authentic worship, and transparent storytelling. My music reflects real-life experiences, healing, and hope—meeting people where they are while pointing them back to God. Whether I’m leading worship, recording, or ministering on stage, my heart is to create space for encounter and restoration.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to walk boldly in both education and ministry without compromising either. I don’t separate my faith from my profession—my life is the ministry. What sets me apart is my lived experience, resilience, and authenticity. I don’t just teach purpose—I live it. I connect deeply because I’ve overcome adversity myself, and I bring that compassion into every space I enter.
At the core, I’m passionate about helping people believe again—believe in God, in themselves, and in the possibilities ahead.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is when my mom and aunt surprised my sisters and me with a trip to Washington, D.C. We had absolutely no idea what was coming! We were actually getting ready for evening church service when they called us to the back of the church. Waiting for us were our travel outfits and packed suitcases—ready to go. We quickly changed and headed straight to the airport!
That moment was pure joy and excitement, and I truly believe it’s the reason I love traveling today. Growing up, my family always made sure we had trips planned. Those experiences opened my world, created lifelong memories, and taught me the beauty of adventure at an early age.
