Life & Work with Jay Sanchez of Nashville and Watertown, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Sanchez.

Jay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story in this community began with a simple but urgent desire: to see myself represented in gallery spaces. Even in the most “inclusive” circles, I often felt a lack of genuine interest in amplifying the voices and stories from other communities—particularly here in Nashville. Being involved in conversations wasn’t enough. I wanted to do more.

That desire to push for deeper change was met with both support and challenge from my dear friend and longtime Nashville arts O.G. Lain York. He listened, encouraged me, and ultimately challenged me to turn my passion into action. The Guinness and Irish Whiskey was flowing like magic potion that night, (laughs out loud).
That moment set everything in motion.

Since then, I’ve become a writer, a board member for an arts publication, and a curator of powerful, community-centered exhibitions. I like to stir the pot and make people think outside their comfort zone. My work is driven by the belief that art should not only reflect but uplift the voices that have been left out for far too long. The creative community holds the key to creating a greater society.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles I’ve faced stem from what at times felt like a “good ol’ boy” system within the art community. I literally at one point envisioned introducing gang activity to the art community. Crazy huh? some reading this were in line to reup and get active with Ghost… hahaha
Still, the creative community itself has been incredibly supportive and receptive to my ideas and curatorial vision. I’m extremely grateful to everyone who’s supported my efforts along the way, muchas gracias a todos.

Galleries and educational institutions have opened their doors to vato like me, a former hoodlum from Los Angeles. It’s both an honor and a deep pleasure to be part of this community, I will continue contributing in ways that are rooted in authenticity, experience, and a true love for the arts.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an independent curator and published writer, deeply rooted in advocacy and creative expression. My work centers on creating intentional, meaningful content through the arts—often using visual storytelling as a platform to uplift underrepresented voices and explore urgent social themes.

What I’m most proud of isn’t just the curatorial projects themselves, but the relationships I’ve built with the artists and creatives I’ve had the privilege of working alongside. These collaborations have shaped my practice and reinforced the importance of trust, vision, and shared purpose in the creative process.

What sets me apart? That’s a great fucken question! I want to believe that it’s my unapologetic passion and unwavering commitment to the creative community. I approach my work with care and conviction, always aiming to amplify authenticity and truth. If you really want to understand what I bring to the table, I’d invite you to speak with the galleries and artists I’ve worked with—they can tell you firsthand about the intention, energy, and heart I bring into every project. (Laughs out loud) I don’t know many people doing what I’m doing just for fun…

What matters most to you? Why?
Oh shit, that’s a good one…
As a curator and member of this creative community what matters most to me is ensuring that artists have a platform where their voices are truly heard via their art. I’m especially committed to representing mi comunidad through art expression, I’m extremely proud to be representing for mi gente. This also goes hand and hand in creating a space for narratives that are often overlooked or excluded from traditional gallery settings. My work is rooted in bringing awareness to conversations that challenge, inspire, and expand the cultural dialogue within the art world.
