Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Barlow.
Hi Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jennifer, I am a mom of three, and the owner of The GlamDen Esthetics Spa. I decided to go to esthetics school in 2017 because I felt like I looked OLD. Sure, having a litter of babes could make any mom feel worn-out and tired, but I felt like I was aging badly and before my time.
I asked myself, “Is this it?! Is this what happens? You get married, have kids, and in your mere thirties, it’s over? You’re old and unattractive and have to accept that?!” NO… I refused to allow that to be my fate. It was vain and dramatic-thinking I am sure, but it was exactly the motivation I needed to take action about my unhappiness. I enrolled in esthetics school and decided that I would learn as much as I could about skincare. It wasn’t that I wanted to turn back the hands of time and be twenty years old again (eww, my twenties were awful), but I felt I like I had every right to feel confident about the way I looked and age with grace. What started as a curiosity to empower myself, turned into a passion to help other moms that felt the same displeasure that I once did about my skin and looks.
Long story short: I graduated as Valedictorian, and by the time I graduated in 2018, I had a thriving esthetics business out of my home!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has absolutely NOT been a smooth road, but it’s been imperfectly perfect. I was a college drop-out and in my mid-30’s the only thing admirable I had ever done was have three healthy kids. Up until a few years ago, I honestly felt like a loser and a total failure! The turning point for me was when I decided to enroll in esthetics school, graduating as Valedictorian of my esthetics class, and starting my spa while I was still in school (only accepting tips). When I first began my business, I turned my never-used guest room (where we essentially stored our junk that we were too lazy to sell, donate, or trash) into a home spa. It was the ugliest room of all time. I gave facials to some of my very first clients on a guest bed in that room! I remember being so embarrassed about the environment of my “home spa”, but so determined to make women glow that I didn’t allow any short-comings in the environment stop me. I wanted to make moms feel beautiful and confident. I wanted to give women real results and make them feel as beautiful as they truly are.
Fast-forward to a few years later: My home spa grew ridiculously fast and I moved into my first commercial space in 2020. I’ve recently survived the pandemic and an extremely nasty two-year-long divorce!
I have persevered through a lot of hard times but I’m so pleased to say I’m stronger and happier than ever! I recently won an award for being one of the top three estheticians and The GlamDen Esthetics Spa was featured as being one of the top three day spas in Williamson County! From a girl who felt like a loser with nothing to show for herself but a dermaplaning blade in an ugly guest room (hahaha!), to being featured as one of the best in the county… I am beyond grateful. My clients, my Glam Girls, are truly my best friends and the only reason why I have succeeded in any way is because of them.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think what sets my spa apart from the others is that I focus specifically on facials for moms. My passion is to help women and make them feel beautiful. I truly believe that when you feel beautiful- you feel confident. And when you feel confident- you believe that you can achieve your goals. And a woman who knows she can achieve her dreams is an extremely powerful thing. We need more of that in the world: women that know their worth and believe they can do anything.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is my Glam Girls. Transforming my clients’ skin, giving them real results, and empowering mothers so that they want to live their best lives is, without a doubt, my life’s purpose.
