Life & Work with Jordan Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Smith.

Hi Jordan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I was introduced to photography through horseback riding when I was 15 years old. There was always the same photographer at all of our horse shows. When I was done riding for the day, I would go to his booth and bother him until finally, he gave me a camera to shoot with. I’m pretty sure I was more a bother to him than anything, but later in life, I was able to work with the same photographer at horse shows. But this time I was shooting, not riding.

In my last two years of high school, I was able to intern at a photography center in an innovative and creative community, Serenbe. There I learned the ins and outs of digital photography as well as analog methods including shooting and printing film photography.

I attended the University of Georgia and obtained my Fine Arts Degree with an emphasis in Photography.

Now, I live and work in Nashville, TN! I am truly inspired by the world and the people living in it. I believe that everyone has a story to tell and I love helping people tell theirs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge I faced getting to where I am today was the fear of failure. I was scared to put myself out there and be on my own. I have been taking photos since I was 15 years old but when the pandemic hit in early 2020 and I was immediately furloughed from my “steady” job, I told myself that now was the time. I took a part time job to keep money coming in but I put my head down, worked hard to grow my business and now a little over a year later I am completely working for myself. It can still be scary at times but each day I choose to overcome my fear of failure and continue to put myself out there. Afterall, I truly believe my talent is taking images of others to tell their story and that’s just what I’m going to do!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Nashville photographer who specializes in capturing people. I believe that everyone has a story to tell. It’s my pleasure and honor when people allow me to try and convey their stories in images. Connecting with people is one of the most important parts of my job. When someone feels comfortable in front of the lens is when the magic really happens. More recently, I have been enjoying shooting families, maternity, and newborn sessions!

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years I plan on continuing to grow my business and really hone in on my niche. I like being versatile when it comes to my shooting ability but I’d like to be known in the lifestyle family world: maternity, newborn, family portraits and any kind of styling, cooking, lifestyle shoots. Also, I plan to develop my own line of presets as well as training materials for emerging photographers. The sky’s the limit for Jordan Smith Photography!
