Life & Work with Jordan Williamson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Williamson.

Hi Jordan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hey, I’m Jordan Williamson, 24 years old, born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. I was homeschooled through the 12th grade. Growing up, I was heavily involved in my church’s worship band. I moved to Nashville in 2019 to live with my cousin and focus on music.

Drums were my first instrument. My dad put me behind a kit before I could walk. In late middle school and early high school, I started experimenting with other instruments because most of my friends at the time could play more than one. I picked up a little piano, bass, and guitar.

With the little knowledge I had, I started writing songs. I wrote so many that I needed to be able to store them in one place, so I saved my money and bought a laptop. And that’s how it all started.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest struggle that I’m facing right now is working a full-time job and being a full-time artist. It’s hard to split your time between something that you know you have to do and something that you want to do.

It’s a balancing act. The more I progress in music, the harder it gets. I am excited for the day when I can spend all my time focusing on music. It’s a long and tiring path, but I know that it’s worth the effort.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist who shares my life and experiences through music, mostly through hip hop/rap. I write, produce, and record all of my music.

I am most proud of my album “Good Luck, Have Fun” that I released in June 2020. I did everything in the garage of the house in Brentwood that I was renting with my cousin. I even mixed and mastered it myself. It was a big growing point for me sonically but also lyrically, a very important accomplishment that I am able to stand on to this day.

The thing that sets me apart from others has to be my background. I grew up only listening to older ’70s funk and soul albums and I started off playing drums in a punk rock band. The dichotomy of those two experiences allows me to craft unique soundscapes and compelling lyrics.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Always remain teachable. You can learn from anybody. Always be willing to put the work in. What comes quick and easy isn’t always what’s best in the long run.
