Life & Work with Kaitlyn Luce of NASHVILLE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Luce.

Hi Kaitlyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Nashville to begin working in the music industry in 2015. During that time, I discovered my love for floral design after taking a workshop. I began creating floral arrangements for friends and family and fell in love with flowers that way. In 2020, as I was hitting a dead end in my music business career, the only logical next step for me was to pursue a career in the floral industry. I had a friend ask me to do the flowers for her wedding the following year, so that was part of what got the wheels turning for me, and was my initial push to really give it a shot. I began my journey with my floral business being virtually completely self-taught. As the years have gone on, I have really honed in on my design style and the direction I’d like for my business to go. Since becoming a full-time business owner and floral designer in 2021, the majority of my work has centered around wedding floristry, and I’ve had the honor of flowering 100+ weddings for luxury clients and everyone in between.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road to getting to where I am now, but it is definitely the thing that has come most naturally to me career-wise.

In floristry in general, there’s a lot of moving parts. Executing the logistics of a wedding and working with a product that is very temperature dependent, especially in Tennessee, can be a huge challenge. Most of my worries and stress when it comes to what I do are trying to keep the flowers alive. There are a lot of outdoor wedding venues in Nashville and surrounding areas, so when it gets to the hotter months, that can be a huge challenge the requires a lot of strategy and perfect timing to make sure that you’re staying with the timeline, but also prolonging the life of the flowers.

Otherwise, there are challenges that come with being a mostly one person run business. Sometimes it really can feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day. It can feel a bit lonely, especially during the more challenging times. But the floral community in Nashville is really wonderful, and I’m grateful to have found many wonderful friends who deal with the same things I do, who understand what it’s like and help me to feel not as alone throughout the many ups and downs that come with being a business owner.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a floral designer who specializes in whimsical, natural, and garden inspired design practices. I like to tell people that I like for my work to feel like you walked through a garden and plucked a handful of flowers. I’m most proud of the ways that I seen my design style grow each year that passes, and that it truly feels like I’m doing work that is most true to who I am as a floral designer. I think that what sets me apart and what I hear most often from my clients is that they truly feel heard and understood when we talk about their vision, budgets, etc. My biggest goal is always that the people I work with feel comfortable and taken care of while we are working together.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am a pretty risk averse person, but starting a whole business from scratch and betting on myself is the riskiest thing I’ve done in my life. I didn’t have anything to fall back on when I took the leap, so I’ve had no choice but to make it work every day for the last almost 5 years.
