Life & Work with Karen Fox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Fox.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
My husband and I moved from Williamson County to rural Hickman County when presented with a job offer in 2017. It was a tremendous and unexpected blessing; I credit our move for turning a decades-old dream into reality; I started my business in October of 2018 on a wing and a prayer.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
A lot of the struggles have been navigating the business side of things. Creatives sometimes get so caught up in the creation process that we don’t pay enough attention to the details. I still remember an early job that I had priced incorrectly, which cost me about fifty dollars to fill the order. Those lessons, while painful, are excellent teachers!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a full-time professional photographer specializing in artistic environmental portraits of people. We are bombarded daily with images, and it only takes milliseconds for someone to decide to engage or ‘swipe right.’ Hence, presenting an impactful initial image is more important than ever before. I love working with creatives and artists on their branding to create specialty images for marketing and social media use. I regularly participate in image competitions, and in 2020 I earned the Tennessee Professional Photographers Association’s Photographer of the Year award for the highest scoring image. I have also earned Tennessee Top Ten for three years; I received a service degree and a certification from TNPPA and will serve as the association president in 2023. TNPPA is an affiliate of the national organization Professional Photographers of America. I love image competitions because it helps to hone skills and learn so much about what it takes to create stunning and impactful images.

What sets me apart is my ability to see things that others do not and then translate that into an image. For most clients, the first comment is always, “I never like the way I look in a photo.” I aim to change their mind and show them what I see that is beautiful and interesting.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I guess the biggest lesson is to plan. Shut down the industry in our state for a few months at the beginning of the lockdowns. I lost an extremely lucrative event job due to cancellation.
