Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie James.
Hi Katie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Music has always been the one thing I couldn’t imagine living without. I started writing songs as a kid and eventually moved to Nashville to pursue music. Since then, I’ve spent the past couple of years developing my sound, independently releasing original music, collaborating with other writers, and performing whenever I can. Like any creative journey, it’s had its highs and lows, but every experience has helped shape me into the artist I am today. I’m incredibly grateful to keep doing what I love, and I’m excited to see where the journey leads next.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Unfortunately, being a creative is rarely a smooth road. One week, you have your name on a billboard, and the next it feels like you haven’t accomplished anything in centuries.
I think the biggest battle you’ll face as a singer-songwriter is honestly yourself. Nobody is a harsher critic than your own mind. You’ll convince yourself you haven’t done enough while somehow feeling like you’re doing too much. You’ll question whether you’re on the right path, even when your heart knows the answer.
At the end of the day, I just remind myself that every struggle has made me stronger. And as long as I get to spend my life doing what I love, every high, every low, and every setback is worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a 22-year-old pop singer-songwriter based in Nashville with a lifelong love for music. I’ve known I wanted to be a singer since I was five, and that passion has only grown stronger over the years. My music focuses on love and loving life and I hope that perspective resonates with anyone who listens. My motto is “See The Good,” because I truly believe there’s something good to be found in every situation and I try to portray that optimism across all my platforms. Along the way, I’ve been honored with multiple Josie Award nominations, and a song I co-wrote was selected as a Top 10 finalist in the NSAI Song Contest. I’ve independently recorded and released 16 songs, finding my true sound along the way.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I was incredibly lucky to have such an amazing childhood, so it’s hard to pick just one favorite memory. But one that has always stuck with me happened back when I was in elementary school just spending my days writing songs in my basement.
One day, I showed my parents a song I’d written, and they were actually impressed. My dad immediately set up all of our music equipment in the living room, the amp, the microphone stand, the whole shebang, and had me perform my song as if I were playing to a packed out room.
Having people believe in me at such a young age gave me the confidence to think, “Hey, maybe I’ve got something going for me here.” I’ll never forget the feeling of making other people excited with something I had created. Looking back, I think that moment played a huge role in giving me the courage to pursue music.
