Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Woodson.
Hi Kayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It’s a very long story! I’ll give you the cliff notes! I grew up in Waggaman, LA , and started to love singing and performing on stage around four years old. By age seven, I started playing the Texas/Louisiana Opry circuit and, then by age ten, I was fronting my own band and performing at parades, parties, weddings, and festivals across the region. In 2004, I took a trip to Italy to train at the Bocelli School of Music then later that year to Romania to represent the United States at the Golden Star Children’s International Talent Fest, where I took 2nd place in the world. By age fifteen, I was still playing out often while also beginning to focus more on my songwriting which resulted in the release of my album titled I’m Movin’ On, which included four original songs. In the fall of 2012, I made the move to Nashville to study at Belmont University, where I later graduated from with a degree in Entertainment Industry Studies. By 2015, I had my first CMA Fest performance on the Hard Rock stage, was playing shows with my band up and down Broadway, and released my first single “Fan for the Flame” to country radio. “Fan for the Flame” became one of the five original songs I released on my 2016 self-titled EP. The next year, I was a contestant on NBC’s The Voice Season 14, after which I released my next single “Unfixable.”
Fast forward to more recently, I am continuously writing, performing, and releasing original music that I am so proud of! It’s been quite the journey and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. Pursuing music has added so much joy to my life, but like any path worth taking it’s come with its share of challenges.
From self-doubt to navigating the ups and downs of the industry, and balancing everyday life, there have been moments that have required real perseverance and growth. At the same time, each struggle has shaped me and has taught me more about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying true to myself.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a country music artist and songwriter, my work revolves around storytelling and creating songs that connect with people. I specialize in performing live and connecting with audiences through relatable music. What I’m most proud of is the journey I’ve taken to get here. Every song, performance, and collaboration has been a stepping stone. Seeing people relate to my music, whether it’s through a song that makes them feel seen or a performance that brings them joy, is the most rewarding part of what I do. What sets me apart is my ability to blend personal experiences with universal themes in a way that feels authentic and approachable. Nashville is full of incredible talent, and I’m grateful to be part of such a vibrant community while staying true to my voice and vision as an artist.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for anyone just starting out is to be patient with yourself and this journey because it’s natural to feel both overwhelmed and discouraged at times. Focus on improving your craft, building genuine connections, and staying true to who you are as an artist. One thing I would go back and remind myself of is that comparison can be one of your biggest obstacles. It’s so important to stay in your lane and celebrate your unique path instead of constantly measuring yourself against others.
