Life & Work with Keren Treviño of Nashville, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keren Treviño

Keren, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my business out of pure love for art, childhood nostalgia, telling stories, and trust in God. I’ve always had a love for photography. I’m originally from Puerto Rico and growing up, we moved around a lot and I think that’s where my journey to documenting started. Since I was kid, I remember my dad giving me Kodak cameras because I loved documenting everything. I think moving inspired him to nurture my love for documentation by giving me cameras. If I wasn’t taking photos of my people, I was journaling. If I wasn’t journaling, I was collecting letters from my friends and family… and I still have those letters hehe. I would collect nick nacks and little things I turned into souvenirs to remember moments.. to remember places and people in my life. After years of documenting, nothing else made sense to me. The only thing that made sense was photography. I mean it when I say the only way I started my business was because I had to trust that my love for documenting and telling stories was going to be enough to start a business.. and here we are now.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road and I think most freelancers/artists can relate to this. While it’s so freeing to be able to create and be in this space. It has been so challenging time and time again. Growing a business can be so scary and lonely. Getting paid can be so inconsistent, it can be hard to find clientele who believes in your vision, and learning your worth can be so hard when social media makes you feel like you are not good enough. I’ve learned that comparison is a thief of joy and being a student of life is the only way I can successfully own a business. Investing in education whether it is through a business course, collaborating with artists with more knowledge, and asking for help from my community are the only ways. I’ve learned to bet and believe on myself MORE than anyone else will, but also learned that my community will show up for me because I show up for them. My community in this industry has truly been the biggest blessing. I’ve learned so much from them. From simple things like buying a new camera and learning new settings to creating a contract that protects me and my work. The list of things I’ve learned and challenges I’ve overcome is ongoing. I’ve learned that when a new obstacle presents itself, it’s simply another step to the life I dream of living.. That life is here and now.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Finding your voice in the industry can be so challenging.. let alone finding your style that’s unique to you, but can also resonate with people. I think while I’ve been so sure of me and my art, I’ve also been so unsure because of how things around move and change so often. Being a photographer is all about learning how to change and grow while not losing yourself in what other photographers are doing is an art in itself. What’s helped me remain who I am in photography is in my confidence in storytelling. Storytelling has always been a part of my life.. of my journey and I am confidence that I can bring that with me everywhere I go. I consider myself an archive and my work is a cinematic archive.

What truly sets me apart from my competitors are these few things:

Story-Driven Photography: My passion for documenting life’s moments comes from a place of deep storytelling. I’m not just taking photos; I’m hoping to preserve memories that have emotional depth and meaning, something my clients can connect to for years to come. It’s not just a photo, it’s a cherished story.

Authenticity & Trust: I aspire for my work to be rooted in authenticity. I’ve built my business on trusting my passion and creative instincts. I’m always wanting my clients to feel the sincerity, which I know can help them feel relaxed and confident in my work, knowing their true essence is being captured.

Fun and Playful Experience: Many photographers might offer traditional or structured sessions, but I want my clients to feel like kids again—free, creative, and unguarded. My photoshoots are meant to be playful experiences that allow clients to express themselves, relax, and truly enjoy the moment, resulting in more natural and joyful photos.

Legacy-Driven: I truly believe in having cinematic archives… emphasis on archive! I’m not just about taking great pictures; I aspire to create heirlooms. I don’t want my photos to only be for today, but a gift for future generations. I want my clients to know that the images they leave with are timeless, preserving memories that can be passed down for years.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Becoming a photographer is fueled by my childhood memories and I believe most of my memories deserve a spotlight. One of my favorite memories would be letting my brother put me in a box with wheels. For context, my brother and I were always creating something that was outlandish, but it made sense to us. He loved legos so he decided he needed to create a car. He took a cardboard box, added his training wheels to it, and created holes on the outside where could hold on to. It’s clearly not a good idea because a cardboard box isn’t that sturdy, but I believed in my brother’s creation and let him push me down a hill. We all can imagine how that worked out for us. It didn’t haha. I ended up scratched up at the end of the hill. We had many moments like that. Getting hurt never stopped us from continuing on which is something I hold on to today. Owning a business can hurt and hurt badly, but believing in yourself and putting yourself out there time and time again can help move you forward. We’ll get there with a few scratches, but each victory is worth every scratch.
