Life & Work with Kevin Temple

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Temple.

Hi Kevin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my career 8 years ago as an actor. I was 21 years old and didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew working at a factory wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Being an actor came up in a conversation with my father and I decided to commit to making it happen, so I started traveling. Being from Kentucky where there isn’t much opportunity, I found myself going to Nashville and Atlanta a lot of gigs. 4 years later I get into a monologue competition in Atlanta called Monologue City and the host was a stand-up comedian. For the competition, I chose to do a comedic monologue and I placed 2nd but the comedian was impressed and asked if I wanted to try stand up. Two weeks later I went back to Atlanta to do stand-up for the first time. Honestly, it went terrible, but I love a challenge so I started hitting the Nashville scene for open mics as much as I could. After three years I finally got it down. I found confidence on stage and since there wasn’t any comedy clubs in my town or surrounding areas I created platforms in 4 different towns Russellville, Bowling Green, Franklin, and Morgantown. All in Kentucky. They are monthly shows that are still currently going on. I started not only doing my shows but other shows in states all over the US and by the grace of God I was given an opportunity to open up for Rickey Smiley in Bowling Green, KY on April 15, 2022.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Getting to where I am now was by far the hardest thing I have ever done. At the beginning, it was just finding out where to start and how the game works. It was a struggle working a full-time job and traveling to do stand-up investing all my money just to get better at my craft, but it had to be done. Staying up for over 24 hours, sleeping in my car because I’m too broke to pay for a hotel, not having time for my family and friends because all I could think about is how I could get better, and not having much support really started getting to me but I couldn’t quit. I was on a mission. Yeah

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a stand-up comedian. I love to make people laugh. That brings me joy. My specialty is storytelling. I tell descriptive stories and act out different characters to create laughter. I feel like me having an acting background separate my comedy from most comedians. I’m proud of myself for not giving up because that’s the easy thing to do.

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking?
Anytime you chasing your dreams you have to take risk. You have to invest even though you might not have it. Sacrifices has to be made in order to get to where you want to be. You may lose friends and family because people don’t understand your choices, but it’s not their life so it’s important to stick to the task at hand.
