Life & Work with Krissy Bodnovich of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krissy Bodnovich.

Hi Krissy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve worked in marketing since 2015, and my first job was with a commercial real estate company, which feels funny now because social media looked completely different back then. Businesses were still figuring out what to even post, and nobody was talking about algorithms or short-form video yet.

From 2015-2020, I switched jobs a few times and actually drifted away from social media for a bit. But I knew I always wanted to get back to it, so on the side, I started helping a few businesses with social advertising. What started as a small side hustle slowly grew into something bigger than I expected.

In February of 2020, I decided to take the leap and do it full-time. At this point, I actually started with zero clients. It was very much a “figure it out as you go” season of life. Somehow, after all that, that side gig turned into the business that I run today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not exactly a smooth road, but more like a “wrong timing that somehow worked out” kind of situation.

I started stepping into doing this full-time right before COVID hit, so there was definitely a moment of, “well… this could go either way.” A lot of uncertainty, businesses pulling back budgets, and no real roadmap for what remote marketing services were supposed to look like at that time.

But oddly enough, that challenge turned into an opportunity. As teams downsized or shifted, a lot of businesses suddenly needed flexible support and were more open to outsourcing work they used to keep in-house. So while it was a stressful time to start, it also forced me to adapt quickly and build everything in a more remote, agile way from the beginning.

It wasn’t smooth, but it pushed me into figuring things out fast, and that definitely shaped how I work now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a social media marketing specialist and content creator. I work across TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, both on the content side and through paid advertising on those platforms.

What I’m most proud of is the results I’m able to create for clients by telling their story in a really creative, engaging way. Good marketing comes down to good storytelling, and I love seeing that translate into real growth and engagement.

I also know the algorithms pretty well… enough to usually get a quick read on whether something is going to perform or not and why.

I think what sets me apart is that as a chronically online person, I really understand the “language” of each platform. TikTok, LinkedIn, Instagram… they all require a different tone, format, and approach, and I like being able to move between them naturally. And honestly, I like to think I have a good sense of humor, and it shows up in my work too, which helps clients’ content feel more real and less stiff.

What makes you happy?
Personally, I’d describe myself as happy-go-lucky. It really doesn’t take much to make me happy. Honestly, I just love to laugh. That probably sounds like a silly answer because who doesn’t love to laugh? But if I’m laughing, I’m happy. And I love making other people laugh too.

I also live in such a beautiful place here in West Virginia, so I really enjoy being outside, exploring, and just taking it all in. And I love being active. I do CrossFit, so lifting heavy weights brings me a lot of happiness.

Professionally, I’m happiest when I see my clients win. Whether that’s content going viral or ads performing better than expected. I also really enjoy the creative side of it, especially when I come up with something and clients say, “How did you even think of that?”
