Life & Work with Makenzie Phipps

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makenzie Phipps

Hi Makenzie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a simple, southern woman that was born in the great state of Virginia. I was actually born on the Virginia/West Virginia line, so I always like to say I got the best of both worlds growing up in that area. I’ve always enjoyed music and it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do since I was a little girl. From the moment I could talk, I started to sing. I got started very young in church and from that point on, I started doing my own shows out in public around my hometown. From being 14 years old to now being 22, I’m very fortunate for everything that I have been given and for everything that I’ve been able to be a part of. I currently reside near Nashville, Tennessee, and I’m loving the city life where my music career can grow and where I can learn so many new things! I don’t know what the years to come have to offer me, but I know it’s all in the Lord’s will.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I feel, as though, any career path you choose to take in life has its ups and downs. I have been fortunate that music has always came naturally to me, but at the same time there’s always room for growth. The biggest struggle I had growing up doing music was people around me not taking my music as seriously as I would’ve liked them to. In my hometown, there wasn’t really as much of a music scene as there is in Nashville. I felt as though some of my peers and relatives thought my music was more of an expensive hobby rather than a career choice. Over the last couple of years, I think their opinion has started to shift to now seeing that it IS a career and can be a great one. It may not seem like a “normal” job, but it’s something that I love to do and I’m happy doing. I’ve always said in life that I would rather have a job that I love to do rather than one that I’m just not passionate in!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
One thing that I love about being in the music industry is writing my own songs to share with others. Ever since moving to Nashville a year and a half ago, I have been really diving into more songwriting. Trying to find who I am as an artist, who Makenzie Phipps truly is. Sometimes when I write, a song can take me one day to finish and then other days, it can take a whole month or longer! At the end of the day, it’s all about trusting the process. One thing I’ve had to learn with songwriting is some songs may be great, and some may not be as great haha. You still have to keep writing to get the good ones out. It means a lot to me when my songs are able to connect with people, especially on topics that may be difficult to deal with in life. That’s the beauty in music: when words fail, music speaks!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
To take it day by day. Not everything is going to happen at the drop of a hat, and that’s okay! I’m a very big perfectionist and I always try to strive to be better each and every day. Not every day is going to be a good day and not every day is going to be a bad day. You just have to have faith in yourself and let the good Lord above guide you on where you should be going. As someone very near and dear to me has always said: it’s a mile not a sprint!
