Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Luster.
Hi Mallory, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hiiiii! I love this question. So, I am a registered nurse here in one of the critical care units in Nashville, Tn. I love my job as a nurse, and I have always had a passion for helping people. Working as a nurse, or working in healthcare in general is a very rewarding job, and I thank the Lord every day for blessing me with that career. I also have always had a passion for photography. The ability to capture time or just the little moments of everyday life is something I love to do with my whole heart. Working in the ICU, we, unfortunately, see a lot of death, and I feel like that has definitely given me a more profound outlook on just how short life really is, and how important it is to capture all the moments while you can. It wasn’t until three years ago I took a leap of faith and pursued photography. I bought my first professional camera/lens and dove headfirst never looking back. I took an online class to learn everything there was to learn about my camera, mentored with a few photographers I admire and put a lot of practice in. I am so glad I pursued something else I was passionate about. I focus mainly on weddings, couples, maternity, and family.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t wait to say it was a bumpy road, just maybe a road with lots of twists and turns. Anything that you do, takes work. You can love your job with your whole heart, but it still takes learning and practice. There are a lot of amazing photographers in my area or just amazing photographers in general. I think one of my biggest struggles has been comparison. I have had to learn that there is room for everyone, and I bring my own style to the table.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in Wedding & Couples Photography. Couples are so much fun to photograph, and it’s fun to bring out the playfulness during our sessions. I like to capture all of the silly, playful, romantic, funny moments with my couples. During my sessions, we do a lot of prompts, and games to bring out all the fun and laughter. Instead of me posing you and taking your photo, I am going to direct you. I like to give my couple a prompt to do, watch it unfold, and capture all of the feels from that. I have a bubbly, energetic personality, so I like to have a lot of fun during my sessions.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I reached out to several of my favorite wedding photographers. I asked questions about gear, advice for just starting out, workshop information, etc. Social media and word of mouth has been amazing for getting the name of my business out there. There are all kinds of ways to advertise your small business for free, such as; Instagram, Facebook, tagging all of your photos, collaborating with other vendors, website, Pinterest, blogs. Since I specialize in weddings, I try to share my work with all of the wedding vendors that I work with. That is a way for them to advertise you, and also a way for you to advertise their work.
