Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Goorevich.
Michael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am from Buffalo, NY (Go Bills) and have been in Nashville for eighteen years. I came here to work with Manuel Zeitlin, one of Nashville’s greatest champions and loved my time with him as Zeitlin Architects where I was really introduced to living and working in Nashville. I then started my own studio fourteen years ago, primarily working on custom homes. Prior to Nashville my wife and I lived in Toronto, Ontario/ Boston Mass./ Rome, Italy and Cleveland,Ohio. We like to think we have been around the block a few times. I went to school for my Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Cincinnati and followed that up with my Master of Architecture at Harvard’s Graduate School of Architecture. I am also a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. I have wanted to be an architect my whole life and I credit my exposure to great buildings as a kid in Buffalo for starting me down this path I am still traveling today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are no smooth roads to your dreams, Just ask Jason Isbell…..
“From the sky, the highway’s straight as it could be
A string pulled tight from home to Tennessee
And still somehow those ditches took the better part of me
From the sky, the highway’s straight as it could be”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I try very hard to listen and see…. Listen to what my clients are telling me and see the site and their program for what it is, not for what I want it to be. This helps me to authentically approach each project. I’d like to think that my clients walk away with a strong sense of having been heard and seen. My goal is to exceed their wildest dreams, (all architectural ambition starts with a dream) yet, I don’t know my clients for very long and I have a very short amount of time to try to get to the heart of the project. The goal is less to find the answer, it’s more to uncover the question. This all said, my work is not for everyone and everyone isn’t necessarily cut out for an architectural project. It’s a bit of a roller coaster and it’s a long one at that. At the end what I would like to be known for is bringing light (real light from the sky) into their daily lives.
What makes you happy?
Exceeding my own dreams and goals, making other people happy.
