Today we’d like to introduce you to Nahdra Ra Kiros.
Hi Nahdra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a young child, I loved creating and expressing myself thru visual arts. My adopted Mother would work hard to bring home new clothes for me and I would be so excited, as I would see exactly how I was going to take it apart and make it into a piece I would love! Although my Mother hoped I was going through a phase, it did not stop. I cut up sheets, pants and towels to create clothing sewing them by hand. Upcycling was not a term I was familiar with at that time in my life. A teacher saw my drawings of my designs and said you can be a Fashion Designer. I did not know what that entailed but I knew I loved art, fabrics, dance, music amd patterns. When I would Dance & listen to Music, I would see colors and patterns. They look like fabrics making art. This intrigued me to make my visions tangible and translate them to share with others. In College I learned how to sew while meeting other Creatives & people in the Fashion industry. I was invited to do a Fashion Show and from there a Photographer seen my work and asked me to do another Fashion Show, after that it continued to snowball from there. I was asked so often, I did more Fashion Shows then I had number of clients. That eventually led to me designing for many, including Musical Artists, Theater Playwrights, Films, and anyone who enjoyed looking unique.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When being an Artist, or an entrepreneur its vital that you know how to push through even when you may not feel like putting in the hours.
Some of the biggest challenges has been financial. Sometimes I have these big visions and or wonderful fabrics yet the money is not always there to do it. Supplies are valuable and I love recycle and sustainable materials. So I do my best to keep resourceful pieces around for use.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
