Life & Work with Nicole Mattingly of Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Mattingly.

Hi Nicole, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started as an herb farmer back in 2010 and I fell in love with the smell of plants. I ran an herbal based skin care business for 10 years and through this, my passion for scent grew. In 2024, I completely switched gears and decided to follow my true passion, perfume. I have traveled across the southeast selling my wares for the past two years, and in the spring of this year had the opportunity to open Reliquary Perfume’s first brick and mortar.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The decade leading up to Reliquary Perfume was full of struggles, but totally worth it. The majority of the time I was running my skincare business, I was also a full time caregiver. I have pivoted in every way imaginable to make it to this point. I was very burned out, so shifting gears and tapping back fully into the creative side of business, was the renewal I needed. I am now able to fully focus on my business and this alone is making things feel so much smoother.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Reliquary Perfume is a micro-perfumery in the heart of Nashville, TN, handcrafting spellbinding scents for the body and home. I created this brand to tap into the darker side of fragrance. I could never find a scent to meet what I was looking for so I decided to create my own. I wanted to create something for those of us who like our scents a little darker, a little more mysterious, and a little bit macabre. As a born and raised Nashvillian with appalachian roots, I wanted to tap into the dark allure of the gothic south. I am most proud of creating a line that not only appeals to the spooky folks, but that I now have a little something for everyone. I think the thing that sets me apart is specializing to scents that evoke memory to an experience, something haunting, yet comforting.

What does success mean to you?
For me success is feeling alive and excited to do what you love everyday.
