Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Turmel.
Hi Rebecca, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Yes, of course. Thanks for having me!
My name is Rebecca Turmel and I grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, USA. My original plan was to pursue a career in musical theatre. I was always singing as a little girl, so in 2008, my parents brought me to audition for our hometown’s community play “Seussical”. I fell in love with the stage and storytelling. Throughout my childhood and into my college career, I performed in over a hundred different stage shows. I studied theatre in college, but something in me shifted during my senior year.
I found a much deeper connection with playing music and telling stories from my point of view, not a character. I taught myself to play the guitar and ventured out to local mics to get experience with this new passion of mine. This soon turned into offers to play professional gigs and then a few years later, led me to my decision to quit my day job and become a full-time musician. I played out as a cover artist for a few years and then I felt it was time to take the next step. I tried writing my music a few times before, but nothing ever came from it.
After a terrible heartbreak, my debut single “Am I Missing Something?” poured out of me in 2022 and I went to a recording studio for the first time. This song brought my manager, Jim Yeager, into my life who has taken on the all-consuming task of managing my recording career and helping me hone my craft. Jim has been working in the music industry for well over 30 years; he has recorded and produced many records for both himself and others, entertains professionally, and has mentored several up-and-coming artists. He is the reason I took a leap of faith and headed down to Nashville to see what I am capable of.
We recorded my sophomore single “Girls on Fire” at Blackbird Studio and just got back from another session there working on another project (but more details will come on that later). I just celebrated the year anniversary of my recording career and it’s crazy to think about everything we’ve already accomplished together. It truly is a team effort and Jim has taught me so much, as well as helping me discover who I am as an artist. The story is just beginning.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have certainly been a few bumps in the road, but it always comes back to one thing. I don’t feel like I’m good enough. I struggle with believing in myself. I often have to talk myself off the ledge because I feel like I’m not talented enough, confident enough, smart enough… the list of “enough” goes on and on. I am a perfectionist which is a challenge I am working every day to overcome. I am learning to find the beauty in imperfection. My insecurities are my worst enemy and I’m trying to learn how to have patience and be kind to myself.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel that my success is a result of my grit. I just keep persevering despite how challenging and exhausting it can all be. Chasing your dreams is hard work, but I force myself to continue because this is what I am passionate about. I have hope that if I keep moving forward it will all be worth it in the end. Music is my heart and soul. What else would I do?
