Hi Sally, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I found Smith Lake in 2006 with friends I worked with in Birmingham, AL. A few years later, my now husband & I were invited back and realized we both shared a love of the lake. I grew up on the Gulf Coast and was not a “lake girl” — but Smith Lake stole my heart and I converted. We put an offer on a house we’d never set foot in on a “hail marry” offer “pass” via text message. I vividly recall I was driving down I-65 when I learned we were about to own a lake home. We became the official owners a few weeks later and the day before our closing I found out I was pregnant. A few months later — our baby boy was born and brought with him some different abilities — Smith Lake is where we went in those first few months. I would tell you it wholeheartedly helps heal the scars of something unexpectedly beautiful. Having a child with special needs takes a village and I have been repetitively touched by the Smith Lake community in how it comes together for causes.
I joined Joseph Carter Realty to help ensure the day people close on their Smith Lake dream it is one of the best days of their life! In my time on Smith Lake, I’ve renovated and sold — and built on raw land — including bringing in everything down to getting the physical address with the county. Smith Lake Alabama is my happy place and I am honored to not only work as a Realtor with Joseph Carter Realty but as the marketing arm for Cornerstone Construction, Free State Boat Docks & ProTurf Landscape. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worth having comes easy! When my son was born, I worked in the medical device industry and shortly after transitioned to a freelance software consultant role to get him into therapy….which in turn led me to do marketing on Smith Lake, my second home.
In 2015, I started an Instagram account called @SmithLakeAlabama — on the back of the boat on Clear Creek as I was “tired” of other lakes getting attention — Smith Lake didn’t get what I thought it deserved. The next morning I woke up to 100 followers…..today it is the largest organically grown following and I work with the best of the best on Smith Lake…
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a marketer by nature… but what truly sets me apart is I cannot market your product, your business, or merely YOU — unless I believe in you or your product. I love Smith Lake and it’s been easy to have a bird’s eye view and select my businesses without showing my face. I made an appointment to buy a new dock and after my experience, I decided they were going to be a client. Free State Boat Docks is my dock of choice as a result.
After my 2nd real estate experience — I found myself sitting down in the office of the #2 broker on the lake — I told him… you’ve been never bought or sold for me — but I want to work for you. Two years later, after becoming his Marketing Director — I got my RE license to help him ensure the day you sign off or on to Smith Lake is one of the best days of your life. It was mine.

Katie Hines Porterfield of Nashville is the author of my most prized and loved Smith Lake item — Smith Lake A to Z — a children’s book that is coffee table worthy. I found “Lake Martin A to Z” and wrote her and begged for a book. She did her thing — of ALL the t-shirts, pots, cups, and hats, Smith Lake A to Z is my favorite item I’ve “brought” to Smith Lake! Katie is fabulous and it brings tears to my eyes to read the words she wrote for not just me but my children.
After my experience purchasing mere land — and watching a house come out of the ground, I knew I wanted to help others do the same! Two years of watching the ethics & loyalty of Joseph Carter, broker & owner of Joseph Carter Realty, I decided I would do it too – and am now a licensed realtor serving Smith Lake!
