Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Ferrara.
Hi Sam, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I grew up on Long Island, NY- born and raised on the island my whole life. I started getting involved with music when I was in elementary school but was avid and passionate about music since I was a baby. I was singing in the school choir and learned how to play the piano in the first grade (but it didn’t last long) and I learned to play the clarinet in the 4th grade. My passion for music thrived throughout middle and high school, being in honor choirs, honor bands, and awards- went to school for music ed at Hofstra University on Long Island.
It was only at the end of my college career that I realized what songwriting was and had a newfound aspiration to perform and create music. Post college I spent the time wiring, networking, connecting with other artists, musicians and traveling back and forth to Nashville and went for my master’s degree before I decided to make the big move to Nashville.
Now that I have been in Nashville for 5 years I have been really working on discovering myself, and my artistry, connecting with other artists and musicians and really getting myself and my music together for the world to hear. It has been a long journey with many pitstops and bumps along the way- but it has been all worth it to get here.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road, but of course, with the smooth road comes, its challenges. This has been a passion of mine for so long and I had left behind my family, friends, a man I was crazy about, and a life I built to follow a dream I’ve had for most of my life. I think of it as taking a risk- but taking this risk was the biggest and best risk of my life.
When I moved to Nashville, it wasn’t a smooth one. I was set to leave Long Island and 12 hours before I left I got into a major car accident that I was lucky enough to walk away from with not a scratch. It shook me and left me in a depression for the first few months of my time in Nashville because it was a scary thing to go through and honestly I saw my life flash before my eyes.
Moving away from my loved ones right away post-accident was very difficult for me to handle and the stress between the accident, being homesick, and worrying about finding a job to make ends meet was super difficult in my mental state. But I always knew I was a strong person and would make it through and that I did.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
So I am a Singer/songwriter, and my main focus is on country music but I am really looking to be experimental in the process as an artist! Genre to me has no bounds and good music is good music. I will say that I truly love being a songwriter though- telling my truth, the stories of my life, the stories of others’ lives. It’s a beautiful way to be creative and it is an experience unlike any other of creating songs that others can connect with. I am proudest of this song I co-wrote with my friends Amanda McCarthy, Kristian Veech, and Lauren Rose Thayer called ‘Second Place’.
The song has a special place in my heart and really helped me to voice the words that I could never say to the people who didn’t give me a chance. It’s a song that others have been able to relate to and tell me their stories and that makes me so proud as the songwriter. That’s why I came to Nashville and it’s a reassurance that I am in the right place. What set’s me apart from others is my authenticity of myself, my story, and my music. It’s something that stands out to others and makes people take notice and I hope that continues throughout my career.
What do you think about luck?
I would call it more opportunity vs. luck (but we can say it’s luck) and I’ve been lucky to be in the right place at the right time for so many opportunities I have had the opportunity to be a part of. I also have so many people who believe in me and my music and want my success and I wouldn’t be the person I am if it wasn’t for those people and opportunities.
It feeds my fire for more and helps me strive for success. Luck also has helped me in my personal life, putting people in my place in the right place at the right time for reasons that can’t be explained. But it’s helped me to be the person I am today.
