Life & Work with Sarah Lightman of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Lightman.

Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ll give you the short version… I got started professionally in music 10 years ago being a street performer where I realized it was a great gift to be able to connect with people and help them feel less alone in this world through music. During Covid times I went through a lot of personal and professional adversity. A lot of my career as a music artist paused and slowed as I went through a huge transformation from 2020-2022. I don’t street perform as often since relocating from Los Angeles to Nashville, but I travel back and forth between both homes a few times a year. I now do live events all over the US fulltime, and I’m striving to become a big touring act.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
SUPER bumpy! Just kidding, but there have definitely been some significant highs and lows. Having had a few team makeovers, vocal surgery, and developing myself as an artist has caused me to become a butterfly at least a handful of times over the last decade or so. I think the most difficult growing pains involved learning how to embody an artist from head to toe. The amount of failures, and fine tuning myself as a creative and human never really stops. I will say the more you know, the easier the obstacles become because you get better at avoiding certain things, and the mental strength to overcome the peaks and valleys of the journey feel more balanced.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in helping people feel seen and heard through my original songs. With a large focus in live performance and releasing songs, people know me for my soulful pop voice. My music sounds like the baby of Amy Winehouse, Corrine Bailey Rae, and Ed Sheeran. I’m proud of the consistency I’ve created overtime, and learning how to tweak and ask questions to keep growing and meeting new fans.

A lot of artists focus on mental health related music which is amazing, but what sets me apart is I don’t use any AI in the writing and production process. I’ve also have never taken a songwriting class despite having attended some writing camps. I grew up around a lot of creatives, so I developed my ear and experience with some music theory, a lot of voice lessons, and writing with others. I’m not against education though, and I would absolutely love to attend a writers retreat someday!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’ve read some of the music industry books in the past, including The Music Lesson series by Victor Wooten and Never Broken by Jewel being some faves, but I’m currently watching music artist documentaries being put out to stay inspired.
