Life & Work with Sharonda “Shay” Coleman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharonda “Shay” Coleman.

Sharonda “Shay” Coleman

Hi Sharonda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been in Nashville since 2020. I moved here from Chicago mid-pandemic, and it was the best decision of my life. Moving away from everything you’ve ever known is a terrifying –yet invigorating experience. Being away from any distractions gave me a lot more focus and clarity, not to mention time on my hands.

My podcast, “Level Up Loading: Fight Feelings, Face Facts” was birthed at that time. A mouthful I know, but it fits the content. Level Up Loading has evolved from an audio-only podcast to having full visuals. It’s available everywhere, including YouTube.

The premise behind the show revolves around all things elevation, growing pains, life lessons, relationships with God, and navigating life in unfamiliar territories (i.e. new levels).

I share my testimony on how God randomly sent me to Nashville during a world crisis. I speak about the lessons I have learned on the way. I have also started adding guests to the show to share their stories and lessons because we can all learn from each other. Level Up Chats has had some profound discussions with both men and women sharing their journey towards betterment.

My newest series is a Women’s Health Series where women have come on to discuss everything from mental health, grief, and dealing with scary medical diagnoses. I share my struggles as well. Ultimately, I just want to provide a safe space for people to not only vent–but also spread awareness on topics we so often are not brave enough to share. I remind people that their story could help someone else! We need each other at the end of the day.

As my podcast’s reach slowly begins to grow I am thankful for every listener/viewer and I hope that my trial and error can help them skip some steps.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, the road has not been a smooth one, but it has definitely been interesting. Adversity is where you get to see what you’re made of.

One major obstacle that came along the way was an unexpected health scare. Last year, I was rushed to the hospital suffering from my THIRD pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs). It was a truly humbling experience, as I am not from Nashville.

My core support system is still back home in Chicago. I am blessed to say they rushed to be by my side and nurse me back to health. Luckily, I am much better and getting the care I need. I want to use my platform to bring more awareness to blood clots, because they can be fatal.

As a three-time survivor, I know that I am extremely fortunate to be alive. Every day is a gift!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most proud of the connections and strides I have made here in these last 3 years. There is a lot of love and support here in Nashville. I have dibbled and dabbled in a few niches since moving to Nashville. I love my podcast, it’s my baby–but it is not my only hobby.

You can find me where the poets are! Poetry is a long-time love of mine and I am proud to say that I have graced a few stages here in Nashville. I am always looking for a good open mic, whether I am performing or just there to enjoy. Spoken word is powerful, beautiful, and universal.

I also love live music. Back in the day, If anyone has ever been to Monday Night Jazz at the Local Distro–we’ve probably met. I was a regular and I miss it severely. I used to frequent Minerva as well when they had a live band playing. I pretty much go where the instruments are real!

Stage plays, comedy shows, and sip-n-paints are also honorable mentions. I like being around creativity and expression.

How do you define success?
For me, success revolves a lot around my faith. My walk with God is extremely important to me and I want to know that I have left a mark on this Earth whenever my time here is up.

Touching lives, and making people feel heard and seen– that’s success for me.

Being able to encourage someone and speak life over their situation makes me feel like a success. I know that I am impactful and I know that I add value to this world. Whether I reach 2 people or 2 million– I rest assured in the fact that I’ve made a difference in someone’s life.
