Life & Work with Sean & Cierra Trainor of Southern Call

Today we’d like to introduce you to  Sean & Cierra Trainor.

Southern Call (Sean & Cierra Trainor)

Hi Sean & Cierra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We moved to Nashville in 2015 and both had solo projects. We always worked together and were a part of each other’s solo projects but in 2017 we decided to form our duo, Southern Call.

We released singles throughout the years, but it wasn’t until last year, 2023, that we found our sound. We released our debut album, Pioneertown, along with a short music film that we premiered at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Music is constantly evolving and there will always be highs and lows that come along with it, no matter if you’re just starting or the most famous artist in the world. For us, as independent artists, it can sometimes feel like those struggles and losses are more apparent, but it also makes us want to work harder!

That’s what is so beautiful about creating, we have been able to take the negativity/the hard times and we’ve been able to turn it into something positive through our songs that hopefully others can connect to as well!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are an Americana duo here in Nashville, TN called Southern Call. We are most proud of our debut album, Pioneertown, along with the music short film (featuring 5 songs from the album) that we released last year! Pioneertown is about dreaming, taking chances on things that seem out of reach, and the realization that life comes with twists and turns for the better. The best part about that project was how it all came to life.

We knew we wanted to release an album and we also wanted to take a trip with two of our best friends, Mallory and Ben Holcomb (Nashville production company, Huckleberry). All four of us were tired of feeling like we had to make art that fit the mold and that other people wanted instead of making art that we believed in.

We booked a trip out to Pioneertown, CA, and shot 5 music videos in 4 days! It was the most special trip and it blossomed into something beautiful! Our music is full of unique blends of rootsy instrumentation, soaring harmonies, and heartfelt songwriting along with our signature desert and red dirt vibe.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Funny enough, both of our favorite childhood memories revolve around music. Cierra’s favorite childhood memory is when she would be in the car listening to the radio or blasting CDs. She would always sing at the top of her lungs (and still does).

It is the perfect practice room. It’s a place to sing along to your favorite artists, try out new harmonies, and even a place to write your songs! Sean’s favorite childhood memory is seeing his first concert which was his all-time favorite artist, Bruce Springsteen!
