Life & Work with Steve Robinson of Music Row

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Robinson.

Hi Steve, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Grew up as a poor kid from Traphill, NC. Always had a drive and a passion for music. I got my first guitar around 10 years old and started learning to play. Lessons were never my thing so a lot of what I know was self-taught or I learned from the old-timers in my life. My grandpa, Vic talked to me often about the industry and the things that come along with it. When I lost him at 13, I was devastated, to say the least.

I put guitar and music on the back burner for a while until I joined the navy. Then I started learning how to play and sing together which opened up a whole new realm for me. I started writing my own music around this time which really opened up a lot of aspects in my life I never knew existed. A short time after being out of the military and back into civilian life, a friend asked me to do an open mic night at chars steakhouse in Cookeville, Tennessee. This was the first time I would be performing in front of people and the first time anyone had heard my original music.

After getting an overwhelming response from the crowd it was like the spark was back to drive for the dream I had had since I was a child. I continued to play and write and sing all over the country including places like LA. and Nashville was always the ultimate goal and finally one day I got my chance to go record with direct image studios. Kenny Royster was an amazing producer who has worked with so many big artists in Nashville, so to say, I was blessed is an understatement.

We recorded three of my original signals a few weeks later and the recognition started coming in from everywhere. To this day, I still drive to make my ultimate goal of playing at the grand old opry in that circle that so many amazing talented legends have played.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never an easy ride chasing this dream. I’ve had family fallouts, issues with money, and being able to continue to support my dreams. Nothing worth having is easy and nothing easy is worth having.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a welder by trade which other than music is what most people know me for. I’m a singer-songwriter all the time. I play in any bar/restaurant that will let me play. I’m averaging about four gigs a week. I’m most proud of my little family.

My wife Brittany has supported me and my dream since day one and my kids who are young but still know that daddy’s always there for them. I think what sets me apart is the fact that no matter how dark the hour is, I push myself to be better and get through it. I’m a firm believer that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I’m hoping to see myself signed with a major record label and be able to do what I love for a living.
