Life & Work with Steven Boo of Hermitage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Boo.

Hi Steven, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started playing golf when I was 17 years old. I progressed quickly and got my handicap down to low single digits with in 2 years. I went to college at MTSU and tried to walk-on the golf team my junior year but was not good enough. I kept working hard and knew I’d like to work in the golf industry or be a coach one day so I tailored my degree in that direction. I was fortunate enough to have internships with the 1st Tee Program in Middle Tennessee and another with the Tennessee Section PGA. Through those connections, some luck and a friend, I became the volunteer assistant coach for the Vanderbilt Women’s golf team and was in that role for 3 seasons. After graduating college, I worked at several different golf courses in the area learning how to be a golf club professional. I did this for a couple years but did not love the business side of golf. I took a small hiatus from the golf industry and started playing more competitive golf again and found my love for the game. I moved to south florida for a season working at a private club and playing competitively but wanted to move back closer to home and family. I found a position at a private club here in Nashville and reconnected with a friend who just became the Head Golf Coach at Trevecca and worked as his assistant coach for 4.5yrs. As I was coaching, I still worked as an assistant club pro at a couple different clubs in the Nashville area. While I was still coaching at Trevecca I was offered a full-time Teaching position at one of the premier private clubs in Middle Tennessee and jumped at the opportunity. Through that position a landed the Women’s Assistant Coach position at MTSU and coached there for 1.5yrs… then Covid happened. I had just met my future wife Kara, and decided to give up collegiate coaching and just teach and coach locally. So I quickly became the junior golf coach that many aspiring kids in middle tennessee chose to come learn from and I haven’t looked back since then.

I currently teach and coach at Gaylord Springs near Opryland with Profectus Golf. I work with 3 other incredible coaches and, for the past 18 months since I’ve partnered with Profectus, we have built and are continuing to build “Profectus Elite”; which is a premier Junior Golf Player Development Program for any competitive junior golfer wanting to learn and grow their skill set for junior golf, collegiate golf, and beyond.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. The golf business can be very hard, especially early in your career. Like many places there can be long hours with not much time off and low compensation. In order to move up you often have to change jobs and/or locations. It is mostly a customer service position which means dealing with frustrated of angry individuals. This is often challenging when you are the face buy lack the power to do anything to help immediately. For me it was long hours and burnout early on along with applying and not getting several opportunities to move forward. So it took me a while to find the right situation and people that actually wanted to help and support your career. Much like playing golf, the business of golf can be very lonely and hard to find yourself when no one is there to mentor and push you along.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the Director of Competitive Development and Head Coach at Profectus Golf. I run Profectus Elite, which is our Junior Golf Player Development Program. We have kids ages 11-18 years old in the program. Most all are highly competitive junior golfers around the state and some play a regional/national schedule. We have 30+ players currently in the program. We have 2 coaches, myself and Josh Bevell, who coach and mentor our players. Josh is a very accomplished player himself. He is the reigning and 2 time Tennessee PGA Player of the Year and qualified and played in the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. Together we coach individual 1-on-1 sessions for each player and provide weekly team/group practices for the players much like a college practice is set up. I currently coach the #1 Junior golfer in Tennessee and 6 other players in the Top 25 in Tennessee.

I am also the coach for several current collegiate players. Over the past 10 years I’ve coached 50+ different college players at the D1, D2, D3, NAIA levels. I also have and currently work with a few tour professionals. This past June, I was fortunate to go coach and caddy for one of my players at The US Open and traveling later this summer to the CPKC Women’s Canadian Open.

I’m not sure what sets me apart from others, but I do enjoy the process of helping all my players find their best path to achieving their goals.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in middle tennessee and was a huge baseball fan. I loved to watch, play, look at stats; really anything that had to do with the game, I was all in. I loved being outside and playing all sports with my friends. I was pretty quite as a kid and still am.
