Life & Work with Terrie Drescher of Indiana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrie Drescher.

Terrie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I went back to school as an older adult and fell in love with the entire clay process. I started selling at shows while still at student at IU Southeast in New Albany, Indiana and then sold out of our coffee shop, Grinders Switch in Pekin, Indiana. In 2015 life simply got in the way and I got out of the pottery business completely. I started creating again in 2023 after having gotten rid of most of my supplies. I am totally a hand builder and roll each slab out with a rolling pin instead of a slab roller. I create my pieces one at a time and thoroughly enjoy the process!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life really did get in the way. I quit pottery to have back surgery, then both hips and knees had to be replaced. And then my husband who had already gone blind developed dementia and I became a care giver. And then my mothers health went down hill and I took care of her as well. They both passed away in 2021 and by the time 2023 come about, I was ready to play in the dirt again!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Getting dirty is second nature to me as I’m a gardener too. I specialize in hand made items, meaning I do not throw anything on a pottery wheel. I also make the majority of my glazes. My work has a rustic vibe to it and I let the imperfections shine through. I have spent a lot of time making pieces to sell – my new view on my work is to make things I like and hope others like them as well!
I do offer classes in my small community and I’m very proud of the fact that people who say they have no creativity can come in and make a piece of pottery that they can be proud of!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I absolutely believe there is no such thing as a non creative person! I didn’t say everyone is an “artist”. I said everyone can create, but not everyone tries.
