Life & Work with Tess Frizzell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tess Frizzell.

Hi Tess, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born when my mother, singer Shelly West was at her height of success as a duet partner with my uncle David Frizzell. They had a number 1 hit, “You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma,” at the time, and she sang it pregnant with me everywhere from the east coast to the west coast and on every award show. I grew up on the road, learning to walk on the tour bus, crawling out on stage, and learning to sing on the mic as I was learning to talk. I can’t remember a time I didn’t want to sing. I grew up singing in church and then learning how to sing in the studio when my dad, Allen Frizzell, was a producer on Music Row, and I would sing demos at his studio. As much as I was raised around music, and it was in me, it still took a while to be where I am today, traveling, doing my shows performing songs that I have co-written. I try never to take it for granted that people still love the music from both the Frizzell and West sides of my family and that I can get paid to do something I love so much.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For anyone born from successful or famous parents, you will hear it is both a blessing and a curse. My mother was the daughter of her famous mother, Dottie West, and experienced this. There are a lot of expectations immediately put on you. A lot of comparisons are made. You must learn to concentrate on the love for the music, the singing, the writing, and the people who love you back. And not be concerned with anyone with any other expectations of you.
