Today we’d like to introduce you to Black Fashion Week.
Hello Black Fashion Week, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
An Award-winning clothing brand CEO, Creative Director, and Poet walked inside a bar. Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but in reality, it was the start of a fashion Mecca. Three like-minded individuals all with different creative abilities merged to create something for a community that is overlooked.
Historically Fashion has not been inclusive to everyone. We set out to change that narrative. We provide high-level fashion shows, similar to mainstream fashion weeks, but specifically for minority communities. We coordinate the LARGEST fashion shows in the south. Over 500 in attendance not including Livestream, and our model base is continuously growing; our previous show featured 70+ models, 13 Designers, and 25 small businesses.
At Black Fashion Week, our mission is to supply minority businesses and creatives with equal opportunities to generate revenue and exposure. Our Motto is that “Anybody can be a model, regardless of age, ethnicity, or background”. Fashion is for everyone, and everyone should be able to experience it. Our program trains experienced and aspiring models in European style and Theatrical walks.
We take in models and businesses from all over. 60% reside in middle TN between Rutherford and Davidson counties, others travel as far as LA or NY to come to be in our show. We have grown to the point where we have expanded from Nashville, and now feature shows in several other cities.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The support from the community in and around Nashville has been overwhelming. Our program has touched so many people, but every good thing has its challenges. One struggle is finding non-minority businesses that are willing to be a sponsor. Even though we have a targeted demographic, we still need the ENTIRE community’s help to pull it all off.
Another struggle is finding good help, and by good we mean honest. Our program puts the people and businesses first. Most people only want to profit from our success. So they join with wrong intentions.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We coordinate the LARGEST fashion events in the south, literally. Over 70 models, 13 Designers, and 25 black-owned businesses and that’s just in one show. Our Specialty is that we train all models from within. Every model is given high-level training, and it doesn’t matter what you look like or what your experience is WE WILL TRAIN YOU.
The only thing we require is a willingness to learn. Our shows provide creatives and businesses with multiple FREE ways to promote themselves or their businesses. Several radio outlets were in attendance, including nationally syndicated shows local podcasts, professional photos and video footage, magazine coverage, and promotional tools.
We also offer paid advertising too which is completely optional. The one thing that sets us apart, is that we accept everyone. Our fashion shows are for everybody.
