Life & Work with The Weird Sisters

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Weird Sisters. Them and their team share their story with us below:

The Weird Sisters are Izaac Short and Gabrielle Lewis. It all started a few years back when they met. Gabrielle was tripping out on Bach and Beethoven conducting orchestras while Izaac was busy being 20 sitting in the basement, not able to go anywhere because he was underage. We met at a spaghetti dinner and started jamming. Izaac had a Fender Rhodes, and Gabrielle had never seen or heard such a beautiful analog anomaly. When Gabrielle discovered the MiniMoog, it was game over; she was hooked. After months of jamming and becoming friends, we decided it was time to do it in front of people. We somehow landed a show at The East Room, and the rest is history.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Where do we begin? Nothing about this project has been easy except making music. We’ve been doing it for a couple of years now. We have struggled to maintain full-time day jobs while playing tons of shows and writing/recording music as much as possible. One time Gabrielle dislocated her knee at a gig. Izaac’s 1996 Jeep Cherokee was towed while we played The End. Being in a band is exactly like the Spinal Tap movie- we have been ripped off, cheated, lied to, underpaid, and overworked, but we love that shit. Every time we hop in the van and roll into a new town, we feel like a couple of cowboys: where are the women, the weed, and the money?

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
We have been creating our world for a couple of years now and specialize in melting face. We are a DIY rock duo, and all our music is original. We do our best to make our live shows feel like a party. We have collaborated with hundreds of local artists during our time in Nashville and feel grateful to be part of such a supportive/creative community. If we’re proud of anything, it’s our music, the videos we’ve produced, and our friendships while doing what we love.

If we knew you were growing up, how would we have described you?
Gabrielle played classical piano and saxophone in a few jazz bands and was a competitive synchronized swimmer as a kid. She toured the country with Sonny LaRosa’s America’s Youngest Jazz Band, playing New Orleans, Texas, and California festivals. Gabrielle was very creative, a total music nerd, yet highly extroverted. By age 12 she knew music would be her life’s pursuit.

Izaac grew up on a farm in Coal Center, Pennsylvania. He was always in trouble at school and questioned any authority. Since the humble age of 8 he was always playing the guitar. Fortunately, many older bluesmen pointed him in the right direction and had him playing bars and clubs in the Pittsburgh area steadily until he moved to Nashville. Not much has changed over the years. I pretty much survived on hotdogs and Chinese food. You can take the yinzer out of the burgh, but you can’t take the burgh out of the yinzer. He only drinks Yuengling beer because it is made in PA. He is a friend of many strange and downright weird principles.
