Today we’d like to introduce you to Thyra & Magnolia Road Karin Thyr Eriksson.
Hi Thyra & Magnolia Road, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We met on tour 30 years ago, so honestly the music and the relationship have never been separate things. There was never a moment where we “started” writing together — creating was just a natural outcome of being together. Thirty years later we’re married, and we still write our songs on the same couch where we’ve had our worst arguments.
For a long time the music had to fit around everything else. Last year we decided to finally create space for it — to stop treating it as the thing we’d get to someday. That decision changed everything.
15 years ago we started making regular songwriting trips to Nashville and found a home in the Nashville community, writing with people who’ve become real friends.
Right now we’re touring Sweden this summer and our single “Time is Money” is out — a song about what the grind costs you in the moments that actually matter. It feels a little funny that it took us 30 years to get here, but maybe that’s the point. Some things need exactly that long.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth? No. For most of those 30 years, our own music was the thing that had to wait. We were touring with other artists, raising kids, making it all work and when you’re doing that, “someday” is a very easy word to keep saying. It’s not that anything went wrong. It’s that life is very good at filling every space you don’t actively protect.
That was the real struggle, honestly — not one big obstacle, but the slow everyday version. Family, work, other people’s tours, other people’s songs. Creating space for our own thing meant actually deciding it mattered enough to take that space, and that took us longer than we’d like to admit.
But we don’t really regret the road. The kids, the years touring for others, all of it — that’s where the songs come from. We just finally stopped waiting.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We’re a Swedish Americana/country duo. We write, record and perform our own songs, the kind built on storytelling, about time, love, and the choices that shape a life together.
Our latest single, “Time is Money,” is about what the grind costs you in the moments that actually matter. We split our songwriting between our couch in Sweden and Nashville, where we’ve been co-writing with friends for over a decade.
But if you ask what we’re most proud of, it’s not a song. It’s that we’re still here, still together, still curious about each other, after 30 years of life, kids, and tours.
A lot of couples can’t work together. A lot of creative partners can’t stay together. We’ve somehow done both, and I think the secret is that we’ve learned to create space, for the music, but also for each other. Together and individually. You can’t write honest songs with someone you’ve stopped seeing.
Maybe that’s what sets us apart: the songs aren’t written about a life, they’re written inside one. Thirty years of showing up, and choosing each other every day. That’s not something you can fake, and we think people can hear it.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Patience, and let’s be honest, that’s mostly Göran’s patience with me (laughs).
But really, it’s that neither of us gives up at the same time. When one of us is done, ready to quit, the other one keeps going , lifts you up, picks you back up. Then we switch. That’s the balance we’ve found, and it’s not a math equation where fifty-fifty makes it perfect. Some weeks it’s ninety-ten. It evens out over thirty years.
