Life & Work with Tina Daugherty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Daugherty.

Hi Tina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Tina (Sims) Daugherty. I was born in Cleveland, Ohio November 8, 1966. We moved to Dickson, TN when I was 12 in 1978. I went to William H. Brett Elementary. Where I started my art classes.

I won an art contest in Elementary in which I was awarded classes over the summer at Supplementary Center. I believe that was the name of it. My picture was on display that summer. I really don’t remember much about that. I do remember I had to ride the bus to downtown Cleveland to get there.

I remember our school was closing due to busing. I remember the bombs and rioting. That we had to live in a campground in a tent because they threatened to bomb our house because we put it up for sale. It wasn’t until I was older did I find out that was during the David Green error. That we lived in the area. I remember on my last day of school I was walking home alone because I was a crossing guard and heard a gunshot. When I got home learned a kid had got shot at the playground only a few blocks from where I was at the time.

Once we moved to Tennessee I was in 6th grade. It was a middle school here. Sullivan Middle School in Dickson, TN.

For 6th & 7th grade I did not have art classes because it was not offered. I do remember drawing a picture of Uncle Sam for one of my teachers then.

8th grade and 9th were Jr. High I started art classes again. Mrs. Cunningham introduced us to drawing first then acrylics. I learned a lot during those years. 9th-12th High School I stayed in Art every year. I’m high school we got into oils and other techniques. Art club. I won many ribbons in art shows, fair entries, and Most Diligent.

Then life takes a turn.

I graduated, started working at Wendy’s, and worked my way up to Co-Management through the years. Got married, children and grandchildren. I really didn’t paint any other than a few crafts here and there. I entered two photos in a photo contest for NASCAR and won. They are published in “2000 Evolution Of Speed” after we took kids to a race that year.

Once kids were out on their own I got back into art.

I’ve entered two paintings in the “Art In The Heart” auction in Dickson. They auction off and money goes for good causes in Dickson. Then they are made into banners and hung on a lamp post in downtown Dickson over Summer.

Mine is currently hanging today.

I do booths on weekends and have booths located in a few locations in town. Just for extra money. But now my husband retired it will become part of our income to make up the difference. I also have my art and photography on ShopVida.com where they take and create clothing, home decor, and more. They handle the business part and I get a % of sales. https://shopvida.com/ look for me in the search bar.

It’s my dream to one day to do a mural somewhere if someone would offer the challenge or opportunity to me that would be awesome.

Also, another dream on my bucket list is to do illustrations drawing in a book or to publish my own book.

Every day is a new adventure. Work, create and travel. Keeping up with my family.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I work full time so art is a side gig for me.

I work for HCA TriStar Heathtrust as purchasing assistant for 23 years now.

I usually do this in the evenings.

Challenge was getting all the supplies and things needed. It’s been a long process. My hubby found a way to get the wood free so that has helped us greatly. I find people love to buy things painted on wood rather than canvas. It’s hard to sell paintings. Very Hard! Think the most I’ve ever made was $150. I even had a guy ask if I’d take $5 and I was like no canvas cost that much!

One of the most challenging things is finding that price point on items. Our hardest is we do one of kind items so we never know. I’ve had items that I know the value and I refuse to go down on price. It may take a while even years but eventually, you win! And I have!

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
One of a kind.
