Today we’d like to introduce you to Yonghwan Bae.
Hi Yonghwan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Yonghwan Bae, and I started Taekwondo when I was 10 years old. I enjoyed it so much, so I kept on going and went to college for it in Korea(Where Taekwondo is rooted). I knew I wanted to do Taekwondo in another country in high school. I was passionate about what I was doing and wanted to spread Taekwondo to the world! So I started to search where I should go and chose America because there was so much diversity, cultures, and people. I saw my chance in America. I came to America in 2014 and started to work as a Taekwondo master for 7 years in Master Yoo’s World Class Taekwondo. And here I am in Nashville to share my passion and love for Taekwondo with you!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not rainbow and sunshine; coming to the States was a very big decision I had to make; my family in Korea wanted me to stay with them. So It was hard to leave them behind in my dream. And of course the language, culture, even foods. Everything was a battle for me. I wanted to return where I thought I belonged but did not give up because that is not the Taekwondo spirit. Introducing something new to people is hard Taekwondo was new to a lot of people, so I needed to give it my all and show great results.
