Today, we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Patrick.
Hi Aaron, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Cincinnati, OH and for as long as I could remember, music was everything to me. I was so fortunate to have been surrounded my all genres and there was always music being played in my household. It was such an important part of my parents’ and my siblings’ upbringing. My dad was in the classics like Led Zeppelin, Motown, George Straight, and The Scorpions. My mom was into all the pop classics like Madonna and Billy Ocean, while my older brother was into Skid Row, Ozzy, Metallica, Tool, Bob Marley etc…so, there was no shortage of musical influences.
When I was a child, there was no doubt that I was different from the rest of the kids I was around. I had to go through a lot of clinical evaluations so they could figure out why I couldn’t sit still or pay attention unless it was something I was into, which made school very frustrating. I got diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, Dyslexia and Tourettes around the time I was in 2nd grade, which at that time started affecting the social dynamic in the school setting, both with teachers and students. This is a time of no social media and cell phones, so teachers could get away with a
lot more than they can today, haha. I was constantly made a public example for things that I couldn’t help, which is incredibly difficult for a young kid to cope with. So the only thing I had was music. It was my salvation. I poured myself into learning instruments and how to play all of my favorite songs. There was no better escape from the world than locking myself in my room with my records and CDs for hours on end.
As I got into my teens I discovered live music and started forming my first bands. Writing music with my friends and playing shows as early as 14 became something that was so fulfilling for me on levels I knew it had to be my path. It was the only thing I cared about. I loved having band practice and being around live music. It was the place where I felt the most comfortable and fit in. I mean, I couldn’t wait until Friday night to go over to my friend’s house to jam or get lost in playing our own songs. It was so apparent this was my calling and the only thing that truly brought me happiness. After over a year of going in and out of many different bands, I finally landed a gig playing bass for my first full-time touring band called Bury Your Dead. The real journey had just begun. In 2006 we got invited to tour with Korn on the Family Values Tour, which to this day was one of the most pivotal moments in my life. We went on to tour with Killswitch Engage, Mudvayne, Disturbed, etc…
The manifestation of my dreams was becoming a reality, and I never looked back. No plan B. Following that chapter I
had gone on to play for bands such as Devildriver, Kingdom Of Sorrow, Lamb Of God, In Flames, All That Remains, and currently, Peyton Parrish to name a few. Simultaneously I also worked on building a tour management career in between those gigs so that I could continue to tour and network so I could learn other areas of the music business and touring profession.
I have tour-managed Bring Me The Horizon, Hatebreed, Epica, K-Pop artists, Memphis May Fire and many more. So here I am at 42, still making a living doing what I love and traveling the world. I am blessed.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As far as personal challenges go, living with ADHD and the other areas of neurodivergence presents all kinds of hurdles, but we do the best with what we’re given. Just like any entrepreneur, it takes years of sacrifice to make your dreams come true. In the beginning, there was no money. It was all for the love of music and passion. Sleeping on random people’s floors, living off gas station food, and no such thing as insurance, haha.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, I can say that there aren’t too many people in the industry who perform as a musician and work in production, both at high levels.
Usually it’s one to the other but I wanted to keep growing both of my career paths because they have always led to other gigs.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Personality is everything to me. Being professional while showing respect to everyone you come in contact with, ya know? Its all about please and thank you.
Whether you’re in a band or working in production, we all have to learn how to communicate and respect other people’s space and time. Being a team player as well as a team leader.
