Meet Alex King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex King.

Hi Alex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
So, It all started around age 9. Just playing along to music in my room on the drum set that I got for Christmas. Playing in my room became more serious once middle and high school marching bands came along. Playing drums even after high school was always a hobby, and I had always thought “Man, it sure would be cool to get to do this for a living” so at about age 20, I joined my first live performance weekend band.

I played for this country band from 2016 to 2018. Gaining nothing but experience and learning all about the music industry. And how… well, it all works. Needless to say, I went broke doing this as a full-time job, and started wondering, “Alex what are you supposed to do with your life”? To me, a 9 to 5 just wasn’t where I wanted to be! It wasn’t me! All of this took place in the middle of 2019 while working at a local car dealership as a valet.

In late 2019, I got a call from an independent artist I had been following for a long time asking me to play a show for him and another bigger artist, Big Smo. So, in my sappy times, I of course took the gig. Played the show and got offered to tour with these guys! Now I’m stoked, right?

Then Covid-19 hit and stopped that dead in its tracks. Causing me to go back to a day job… the exact place I didn’t want to be. But in late 2020, I began to take fill-in gigs with the current artist I play for now. Got offered to play for him full-time after two or three fill-ins. And from august of 2020 to June of 2021, I juggled working a day job and this dream of being myself on a stage and doing what I love until I finally took the leap

I decided to quit my full-time job after some complications with a day job. And at that moment I decided, I will never work a day job again. From June 2021 to currently I have worked hard on my craft, learning the industry in and out (still a lot to learn), and being the best possible drummer I can be. And now after a long-awaited dream, I can finally say I travel the country and play music for a living. And I cannot express how much happier of a person I am because I finally decided to quit listening to my peers and follow my dreams.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, battling with personal issues of not following my dream. Asking myself what is my purpose if it’s not music, Covid-19 stopping my career’s pickup.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a drummer. Known for being a metal drummer in country music. Proud of my accomplishments as a musician I’m not famous I just have a career playing music.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I took a risk dropping my full-time day job for a nighttime/part-time musicians gig that turned into something full-time. It was a struggle due to the fact that I have my wife and daughter support.
